    • J 38197-A Crankshaft Balancer Puller
    • J 37096 Flywheel Holding Tool
    • J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  5. If equipped with the M49 manual transmission remove the transmission brace bolts (2, 3).
  6. Remove the transmission brace (1).

  7. Object Number: 349560  Size: SH
  8. If equipped with the M49 manual transmission remove the flywheel housing inspection cover bolts (2).
  9. Remove the flywheel housing inspection cover (3).
  10. If equipped with the 4L60-E automatic transmission remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transmission-4L60-E.

  12. Use J 37096 in order to hold the flywheel.

  14. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt (1) from the balancer (2).

  15. Object Number: 313955  Size: SH
  16. Remove the crankshaft balancer using the J 38197-A .
  17. 11.1. Invert J 38197-2 so the leg of the tool is facing away from the crankshaft balancer.
    11.2. Install the bolts J 38197-4 to the crankshaft balancer.
    11.3. Remove J 38197-1, J 38197-2, and J 38197-4 from the crankshaft balancer.
  18. Remove the key from the crankshaft.

Installation Procedure

  1. Lubricate the seal surface of the crankshaft balancer with engine oil.
  2. Install the key (3)
  3. Align the key slot in the balancer (2) to the key slot in the crankshaft.
  4. Install the crankshaft balancer (2).
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt (1).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt (1) to 150 N·m (111 lb ft). Use the J 36660-A to torque the crankshaft balancer bolt (1) an additional 114 degrees.

  8. Remove the J 37096 .
  9. If equipped with the 4L60-E automatic transmission install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transmission-4L60-E.

  10. Object Number: 349560  Size: SH
  11. If equipped with the M49 manual transmission install the flywheel housing inspection cover (3).
  12. Install the flywheel housing inspection cover bolts (2).
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the flywheel housing inspection cover bolts (2) to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  14. If equipped with the M49 manual transmission install the transmission brace (1).
  15. Install the transmission brace bolts (2, 3).
  16. Tighten

        • Tighten the brace bolts (3) to the engine block to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).
        • Tighten the brace bolts (2) to the transmission to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
  17. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
  19. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  20. Perform the crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn procedure. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn in Engine Controls-3.8 L.
