Torque Converter Cover Replacement 3.8L

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 208577  Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle In General Information.
  2. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the transmission brace bolts (5) attaching the left brace (4) to the engine block.
  4. Remove the transmission brace nut (1) attaching the left brace (4) to the transmission.
  5. Remove the left side transmission brace (4).
  6. Remove the transmission converter cover bolt (3).

  8. Remove the right side engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.8L.
  9. Remove the transmission brace bolts (2, 3) attaching the right brace (4) to the engine block.
  10. Remove the transmission brace nut (6) attaching the right brace (4) to the transmission.
  11. Remove the right side transmission brace (4).
  12. Remove the transmission converter cover bolt (1).
  13. Remove the transmission converter cover (5) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the transmission converter cover (5) to the vehicle.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the transmission converter cover bolt (1).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission converter cover bolt (1) to 8.5 N·m (75 lb in).

  5. Install the right side brace (4).
  6. Install the transmission brace nut (6) to the right side brace (4).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission brace nut (6) to 80 N·m (59 lb ft).

  8. Install the transmission brace bolts (2, 3) to the right brace (4) and engine block.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission brace bolts (2, 3) to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  10. Install the right side engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.8L.

  11. Object Number: 208577  Size: SH
  12. Install the transmission converter cover bolt (3).
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission converter cover bolt (3) to 8.5 N·m (75 lb in).

  14. Install the left side brace (4) to the transmission.
  15. Install the transmission brace nut (1) attaching the left brace (4) to the transmission.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission nut to 80 N·m (59 lb ft).

  17. Install the transmission brace bolts (5) attaching the left brace (4) to the engine block.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission brace bolts (5) to engine block to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).

  19. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  20. Lower the vehicle.

Torque Converter Cover Replacement 5.7L

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the starter motor, If servicing the right side transmission cover only. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  3. Object Number: 208464  Size: SH
  4. Remove the right side transmission cover bolt.
  5. Remove the right side transmission cover.

  6. Object Number: 208478  Size: SH
  7. Remove the left side transmission cover bolt
  8. Remove the right side converter cover.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 208478  Size: SH
  1. Install the left side converter cover.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.   3. Install the left side converter cover bolt
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the left side converter cover bolt to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  5. Install the right side converter cover.
  6. Install the right side converter cover bolt.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the right side converter cover bolt to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  8. Install the starter motor, if removed. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
