1. Remote Playback Device will not play

Circuit/System Description

The remote playback device must have power and ground and communication via the entertainment and comfort serial data circuit to be functional. The remote playback device sends its audio signals through the radio to be heard through the vehicle speakers

Diagnostic Aids

This diagnostic assumes that the radio is fully functional during radio play The remote playback device audio signal outputs, and the radio audio signal inputs are also a possible cause of this symptom if the physical operation of the system appears to be working. This failure is unlikely due to both the left and right channels of either device would have to be inoperative to exhibit this symptom.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON.
  2. Turn the radio on. Insert a CD into the CD player.
  3. Play the CD.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the remote playback device - CD player.
  2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1.0 ohm of resistance between the ground circuit and ground.
  3. If greater than 1.0 ohm, test the ground circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  4. Ignition ON, test for battery voltage between the battery positive voltage supply circuit and ground.
  5. If battery voltage is not present, repair the battery positive voltage circuit. Test for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  6. Ignition ON, test for 3-6 volts between the serial data circuit and ground.
  7. If less than 3 volts, test the entertainment and comfort serial data circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
If greater than 6 volts, test the entertainment and comfort serial data circuit for a short to voltage. If circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the CD player.
