Did you perform the Starting System Check ?

  1. Remove the INJECTOR fuse 7 from the RH IP fuse block to prevent the engine from starting.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START for 15 seconds.
  3. Using a J 39200 digital multimeter (DMM), measure the voltage between the battery terminals.

Is the measured voltage within the specified range?

Greater than 8 V

Go to Step 3

  1. Connect a DMM set to volts scale between the negative battery terminal and the engine block.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START for 15 seconds.

Is the measured voltage within the specified range?

Less than 0.5 V

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 10

  1. Turn the ignition switch to START for 15 seconds.
  2. Using a DMM, measure the voltage between the positive battery terminal and the starter solenoid terminal B.

Is the measured voltage within the specified range?

Less than 0.5 V

Go to Step 5

Replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Perform the battery load test. Refer to Battery Not Operating Properly .

Does the battery test OK?

Perform the parasitic load test. Refer to Battery Electrical Drain/Parasitic Load Test .

Does the system pass the parasitic load test?

Go to Step 9

Locate and repair the excessive parasitic load.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Check the battery and starter motor terminals for corrosion or poor terminal contact.
  2. If OK, replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

  1. Clean the negative battery cable connections.
  2. Repeat step 3.
  3. If the measured voltage is within the specified range, replace the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Greater than 0.5 V

Go to Step 13

  1. Clean the positive battery cable connections.
  2. Repeat step 4.
  3. If the measured voltage is within the specified range, replace the positive battery cable. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Greater than 0.5 V

Replace the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement .

  1. Make sure any components removed during diagnosis are installed in place and that all connectors are connected.
  2. Repeat the system check. Refer to Starting System Check .
