Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 38122-A Harmonic Balancer Holder
    • J 24420-C Harmonic Balance Puller
    •  J 39579 Camshaft Sprocket Wrench
    •  J 35468 Rear Crankshaft Seal Installer
    • J 41088 Balance Shaft Holding Plate

    Important: Anytime the drive chain is replaced the drive and driven sprockets also need to be replaced.

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the Engine/Transmission assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Engine Replacement .
  3. Support the engine with chains and a suitable hoist.
  4. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  5. Remove the torque converter to the flywheel bolts. Hold the crankshaft balancer with the J 38122-A .
  6. Remove the transmission selector cable.

  8. Remove the transmission to the engine brace.
  9. Remove the transmission from the engine. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission.
  10. Remove the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  11. Clean the flywheel bolt threads and crankshaft threads with nylon bristle brush.
  12. Remove the crankshaft balancer pulley. Use the J 38122-A and the J 24420-C .
  13. Attach the engine stand fixture to the engine. Install the engine on the stand.
  14. Remove the ignition coil and module assembly.
  15. Remove the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  16. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement
  17. Rotate the engine to the TIMED position and remove the timing chain. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Replacement .
  18. Remove the timing chain housing. Refer to Timing Chain Housing Replacement .
  19. Rotate the engine on the engine stand 180  degrees in order to access oil pan.
  20. Remove the oil pan and gasket. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  21. Remove the balance shaft assembly. Refer to Balance Shaft Housing Replacement .
  22. Remove the crankshaft.
  23. Remove the balance shaft drive chain.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the balance shaft drive chain.
  2. Install the crankshaft.

  3. Object Number: 61196  Size: SH
  4. Install the balance shaft assembly. Refer to Balance Shaft Housing Replacement .
  5. Time the balance shaft. Refer to Balance Shaft to Engine Timing .
  6. Install the oil pan and gasket. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  7. Rotate the engine 180 degrees on the stand in order to install the timing chain housing and the other components.
  8. Install the timing chain. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Replacement .
  9. Install the timing chain housing. Refer to Timing Chain Housing Replacement .
  10. Install the front timing chain cover.
  11. Install the upper engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  12. Install the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  13. Install the ignition coil and module assembly.
  14. Connect the engine to the chain hoist and remove the engine stand fixture from the engine block.

  15. Object Number: 33670  Size: SH
  16. Install the crankshaft balancer pulley.
  17. Install the flywheel to the engine. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  18. Connect the transmission to the engine. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T40E.

  19. Object Number: 63037  Size: SH
  20. Install the transmission to the engine brace.
  21. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  22. Install the transmission to the engine brace bolts.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  24. Install the transmission selector cable. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T40E.
  25. Install the torque converter to the flywheel bolts.
  26. Install the starter motor assembly to the engine. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  27. Install the Engine/Transmission assembly. Refer to Engine Replacement .
  28. Refill all fluid levels to specification.
