Removal Procedure

Notice: Do not attempt to straighten any kinked nylon fuel lines. Replace any kinked nylon fuel feed or return pipes in order to prevent damage to the vehicle.

Important: Do not attempt to repair sections of nylon fuel pipes. If the nylon fuel pipes are damaged, replace them.

  1. Relieve the fuel system fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief .

  2. Object Number: 49906  Size: SH
  3. Drain the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Draining .
  4. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in general information.
  5. Disconnect the quick-connect fitting at the inlet side of the in-pipe fuel filter. Refer to Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .
  6. Disconnect the quick-connect fitting on the fuel return pipe near the fuel filter.

  8. Disconnect the fuel tank EVAP pipe quick-connect fitting at the EVAP pipe canister.
  9. Remove the EVAP fuel filler pipe from the side of the fuel tank.

  11. Loosen the fuel tank filler pipe hose clamp.
  12. Remove the fuel tank filler pipe.

  14. Loosen the fuel tank filler vent hose clamp.
  15. Remove the fuel tank filler vent hose at the filler neck.

  17. With the aid of an assistant, support the fuel tank, and remove the fuel tank strap attaching bolts which retain the fuel tank straps.
  18. Disconnect the fuel sender electrical connector.
  19. Disconnect the fuel tank pressure sensor electrical connector.

  21. Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle and place the fuel tank in a suitable work area.
  22. If the fuel tank is not being replaced, go to the Installation Procedure.

  24. Disconnect the fuel feed and return pipe quick-connect fittings. Refer to Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .
  25. Remove the fuel feed pipe.
  26. Remove the fuel return pipe.

  27. Object Number: 49971  Size: SH
  28. Remove the EVAP pipe assembly.
  29. Remove the fuel sender assembly. Refer to Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 49971  Size: SH
  1. Reinstall the fuel sender assembly. Refer to Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement .
  2. Reinstall the EVAP pipe assembly.

  3. Object Number: 49752  Size: SH
  4. Reinstall the fuel feed pipe.
  5. Reinstall the fuel return pipe.
  6. Connect the quick-connect fittings at the fuel sender. Refer to Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .

  7. Object Number: 49733  Size: SH
  8. With the aid of an assistant, position and support the fuel tank.
  9. Connect the fuel sender electrical connector and the fuel sender retaining clips.
  10. Connect the fuel tank pressure sensor electrical connector.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  12. Reinstall the fuel tank retaining strap attaching bolts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the fuel tank retaining strap bolts to 47.5 N·m (35 lb ft).

  14. Connect the fuel tank filler vent hose to the fuel tank.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the fuel tank filler vent hose clamp to 2.5 N·m (22 lb in).

  16. Connect the fuel tank filler pipe to the fuel tank.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the fuel tank filler pipe hose clamp to 2.5 N·m (22 lb in).

  18. Connect the fuel feed pipe quick-connect fitting at the inlet side of the fuel filter.
  19. Connect the fuel return pipe quick-connect fitting near the fuel filter.
  20. Connect the EVAP fuel filler pipe to the side of the fuel tank.

  21. Object Number: 391147  Size: SH
  22. Connect the fuel tank EVAP pipe quick-connect fitting at the EVAP canister.
  23. Lower the vehicle.

  25. Add fuel and reinstall the fuel tank filler pipe cap.
  26. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in engine electrical.
  27. Inspect for fuel leaks:
  28. 19.1. Turn the ignition switch ON for 2 seconds.
    19.2. Turn the ignition switch OFF for 10 seconds.
    19.3. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    19.4. Check for fuel leaks.
