  1. Clean the crankshaft of the following elements:
  2. • Oil
    • Sludge
    • Carbon
  3. Probe the oil passages for obstructions.
  4. Inspect the keyway for nicks or wear.
  5. Inspect the threads.
  6. Important: If cracks, severe gouges or burned spots are found, the crankshaft must be replaced. Slight roughness may be removed with a fine polishing cloth soaked in clean engine oil. Burrs may be removed with a fine oil stone.

  7. Inspect the bearing journals and thrust surfaces for the following conditions:
  8. • Cracks
    • Chips
    • Gouges
    • Roughness
    • Grooves
    • Overheating (discoloration)
  9. Inspect the corresponding bearing inserts for embedded foreign material and determine its source.
  10. Important: Note the location of main bearing high spots. If they are not in line, the crankshaft is bent and must be replaced.

  11. Measure the crankshaft journals. Use a micrometer in order to measure taper and out-of-round. If the readings are within specifications, note the results for later selection of bearing inserts. If the crankshaft journal are not within limits, replace the crankshaft.
