Guidelines for Usage of Transmission K Labor Operation Recondition Add Time

Subject:Guidelines for Usage of Transmission K Labor Operation Recondition Add Time

Models:1999-2008 Passenger Cars and Light Duty Trucks
with 4L60/65/70E Automatic Transmission (RPOs M30, M32 and M70)

Many transmission K labor operations include an ADD condition: To Recondition Transmission. When this term is used with a Major Operation, it means to remove an assembly from the vehicle, disassemble, clean and inspect all parts, rebuild the assembly with the same or new parts, reinstall and adjust following the service procedure. When this term is used in an ADD Operation, it does not include Remove and Reinstall, but only that work necessary to recondition an assembly once it is removed from the vehicle.

The steps in the list below are included in the Recondition Add time and should be completed if the Add time is being claimed on a warranty repair. Not all steps are included below but a complete listing of these steps can be found in SI. For 2007 and newer vehicles, this list is in Automatic Transmission-4L60E/4L65E/4L70E-Repair Instructions-Off Vehicle. For 2006 and earler vehicles, this list is in Unit Repair-Transmission/Transaxle-Automatic Transmission-4L60E/4L65E/4L70E-Repair Instructions.

    • Case extension bushing (33) is removed from the case extension and replaced (2wd only).
    • Speed sensor rotor (699) is removed from the output shaft and replaced (2wd only).
    • 3rd accumulator check ball # 7 (40) is leak checked and removed from the case and replaced if necessary.
    • Case bushing (7) is removed from the case and replaced.
    • Manual shaft seal (82) is removed from the case and replaced.
    • Input and reaction carriers (662 & 681) are inspected and pinion end-play is checked.
    • Reaction sun gear bushing (672) is removed from the sun gear and replaced.
    • Reaction carrier shaft front and rear bushings (665 & 667) are removed from the reaction carrier shaft and replaced.
    • Forward sprag assembly (642-644) is disassembled, inspected, and reassembled.
    • All clutch packs are disassembled and clutches and apply pistons evaluated for wear or damage, and parts replaced as necessary. In most cases, a complete gasket kit (with pistons) is the most economical way to replace gaskets, seals, and pistons as required.
    • Reverse input clutch housing front and rear bushings (603 & 606) are removed from the reverse input clutch housing and replaced.
    • Forward, 3-4, and reverse input clutch piston travel is checked.
    • Forward, 3-4, and overrun clutches are air checked.
    • Oil pump is disassembled and the rotor (212) and slide (203) are measured to determine wear.
    • Pump body bushing (242) is removed from the pump body and replaced.
    • Stator shaft front and rear bushings (234 & 241) are removed from the pump cover and replaced.
    • Transmission end play is checked.
    • Valve body assembly (60) is disassembled and cleaned (the valve body is not replaced).
    • 2-4 servo pin (13) length is checked.
    • Torque converter (1) end play is checked.

If all these steps are not completed, or if the transmission is fully disassembled only for the purpose of cleaning distressed clutch material, the full Recondition Add time should be reduced appropriately. The full Recondition Add time should be claimed only if all steps are completed.
