GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

A 3-2 downshift can be accomplished by moving the selector lever from Drive (D) range to manual Second.

When the selector lever is in manual Second position, RND oil will exhaust at the manual valve. Intermediate oil from the manual valve is directed between the reverse and the TV boost valves.

Intermediate oil acts on the reverse boost valve. This action and the force of the pressure regulator spring will boost the line pressure to 827 kPa (120 psi). This amount of pressure is required to hold the intermediate band and the forward clutch on.

Because RND oil is exhausted, the transmission will shift to Second Gear, regardless of vehicle speed. (RND oil is the feed for direct clutch oil in Third Gear.) With the transmission in Manual Second Gear, you cannot upshift to Third Gear regardless of vehicle speed.

Summary

The forward clutch and intermediate band are applied. The transmission is in manual Second gear.
