INFO ON COATED WHEEL WEIGHTS USED FOR ALUMINUM WHEELS

INFORMATION ON COATED Subject: BALANCE WEIGHT USAGE FOR ALUMINUM WHEELS

Models Affected: 1983-92 ALL MODELS

Wheel balance weights are now available through GM Dealer Equipment at a very attractive price. These are original equipment weights that will assure best fit to GM original equipment wheels. The AW series and MC series of polyester coated weights are offered for aluminum wheels. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT COATED WEIGHTS BE USED ON ALUMINUM WHEELS TO PREVENT COSMETIC DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL. A plastic tipped hammer should also be used to prevent damage to the weight's coating during installation.

Uncoated XT type weights are also offered for passenger car steel wheels.

Usage of AW and MC weights on aluminum wheels by GM vehicle line is shown below. Using the incorrect type of weights will result in improper fit, and such weights may fall off the wheel. This in- formation should be posted near the wheel balancer to aid in weight selection.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
