BATTERY WARRANTY AND FAILURE

ALL MODELS

Recent studies of warranty expense on batteries reveal a high incidence of test and charge, and/or battery replacement at pre-delivery, a fact that is unsupported by zone product reports and engineering evaluations. Section 2.3.2 of the Pontiac Service Policies and Procedures Manual clearly outlines Dealership responsibility with regards to batteries damaged during storage. The procedure should be reviewed with all dealership personnel who are involved with new vehicle storage.

Beginning with the 1987 model year, labor operation N0100 has been removed from the labor time guide for all model years. If a battery test and charge is needed after a repair, additional time allowance of .3 is to be added to the repair time. Other labor hours should only be used when additional repair time is needed in order to correct a defect.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
