Did you review the Exterior Lighting System Description and Operation and perform the necessary inspections?

  1. Shift the transaxle into the PARK position.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.

Are the backup lamps illuminated?

Go to Step 3

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Disconnect the transmission range switch connector C1.

Are the backup lamps illuminated?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

Repair a short to battery voltage on the backup lamps supply voltage circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 6

Adjust or replace the transmission range switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle.

Probe the control circuit of the backup lamp relay connector with a test lamp that is connected to a known good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Repair a short to battery voltage on the backup lamp relay control circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair a short to battery voltage on the backup lamps supply voltage circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the backup lamp relay.

  1. Adjust or replace the transmission range switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment in Automatic Transaxle.
