ENGINE CRANKS/NO START CAM DRIVE BELT INFORMATION

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1983-84 'J' Series Vehicles Equipped With 1.8L OHC EFJ Engines

A condition may be encountered on the 1.8L OHC EFI engine where the engine cranks but will not start. If this condition is encountered, and fuel is being delivered, remove the distributor cap and observe the rotor while cranking the engine. If the rotor does not turn, check for a broken camshaft drive belt. If the drive is ok, see 'Diagnostic Circuit Check' in Section 6E2 of the Service Manual.

Refer to shop manual for proper procedure on Page 6A2-9 to replace camhaft drive belt.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
