Schematic Reference: Instrument Cluster Schematics

NOTE: This diagnostic procedure applies only to the base (U2E) instrument panel cluster (IPC). The base (U2E) IPC is not equipped with a driver information center.

NOTE: The Change Engine Oil indicator is also used for a Low Engine Oil Level condition. When indicator is flashing the engine oil level is Low and when solid and not flashing the engine oil needs to be changed.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

Start the engine.

Does the change engine oil/low oil level indicator display in the instrument panel cluster (IPC)?

Go to Step 3

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition.
  3. With the scan tool observe the Engine Oil Life Remaining parameter in the PCM/ECM IPC Data List.

Does the Engine Oil Life Remaining parameter display about or less than 5%?

Go to Step 4

Reset the engine oil life. Refer to GM Oil Life System Resetting in Maintenance and Lubrication.

Does the change engine oil/ low oil level indicator turn Off?

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 5

Replace the PCM/ECM. Refer to Control Module References in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup, and programming.

Did you complete the replacement?

Go to Step 6

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.

Did you correct the condition?

System OK
