A GM Dealer Sells a GM Performance Parts Engine to a Mail Order Warehouse Reseller Who Then Sells the Engine to a Retail Customer. When Does the Warranty Begin?

This sale would be considered an over-the-counter sale. The warranty begins on the date of purchase by the original retail purchaser. For a warranty repair or replacement the customer is to deliver the vehicle, in which the engine was installed, to their nearest GM Dealer or GM Dealer approved Installer. The GM Dealer or independent repair center must be furnished with the purchaser’s original sales slip, and the warranty certificate (properly completed).

What Are the GM Approved Applications for Performance Parts Engines?

General Motor’s warranty coverage for GM Performance Parts engines will be honored only when the engine is installed in a GM approved passenger car or light-duty truck application as indicated in the GM Performance Parts Catalog. GM does not approve engines installed in marine or motorcycle applications.

Who Can Perform Warranty Repairs?

The GM dealer who initially installed the GM Performance Parts engine assembly or any GM dealer may perform warranty repairs. If the engine was sold over-the-counter, the independent repair center that installed the GM Performance Parts engine assembly or any GM dealer may perform repairs. However, before any repairs can be performed under warranty by an independent repair center, a GM dealer must first authorize the needed repairs as a sublet service.

Where Can I Obtain a Copy of the Warranty Statement?

    • A copy of the warranty statement is located in the General Motors Service Policies and Procedures Manual, Article 1.1.
    • Each GM Performance Parts Engine will be shipped with a warranty statement.
    • Dealers may order the warranty statement using Item #PT-WA-0101-07 via the DWD eStore. This website is found within DealerWorld at www.dwdestore.com.
        Toll-free dealer help desk number : 1-866-700-0001.

How is a Warranty Claim for a Performance Parts Engine Submitted?

Performance Parts engine claims are submitted as a Claim Type B (for vehicles within the 12 months/12,000 mile timeframe) or Claim Type N (for vehicles beyond the 12 months/12,000 mile timeframe). For partial engine replacements, use labor operation J1820 (partial engines are defined as a rotating mass minus heads.) Labor operation, J1840, should be used for complete engine replacements. You will be advised by the PCC as to the accurate labor operation utilization.

Refer to your General Motors Claims Processing Manual for complete claim submittal guidelines (Section VII Special Claim Types).

Are Performance Parts Engines Included in the Powertrain Contact Center (PCC) Review Process?

Yes, dealers must contact the PCC at 866-453-4123 for review, prior to replacement of all GM Performance Parts engines, OEM and Goodwrench® replacement engines, transmissions, and transfer case assemblies, that are replaced under warranty (OEM, B, and N claims) or as a policy adjustment.

If a Failure Occurs Under Warranty, is the Customer Responsible for the Cost to Diagnose?

General Motors’ warranties cover defects in material or workmanship. As with all GM warranties, the customer must first authorize the dealer to inspect the engine for a defect. If it is determined that the engine failure was not a result of a defect in materials or workmanship from the manufacture, the customer will be responsible for all costs associated with the diagnosis and repair/replacement. If it is determined that a warrantable failure occurred, GM will cover the cost of the parts and labor associated with the replacement or repair of the engine (including the applicable diagnostic time as indicated in the GM Labor Time Guide).

What Documentation is Required for a Warranty Repair or Replacement?

The GM dealer or independent repair center must be furnished with the purchaser’s original repair order or sales receipt. (Dealer is to maintain a copy of this information to support the warranty claim.)

Is the Performance Parts Engine Warranty Transferable?

The warranty follows the part as long as the original owner provides the above-required documents to any purchaser of the vehicle in which the GM Performance Parts engine assembly was originally installed.

How Does the Dealership Identify a Goodwrench® Engine from a Performance Parts Engine?

Refer to the Performance Parts Catalog for a complete listing of Performance Parts engine part numbers.
