Tick Noise and Misfire Due to Broken Valve Springs - 2005 VIN F 2.2L Engine - kw compression cylinder head low knock MIL P0300 P0301 P0302 P0303 P0304

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI.

Some 2005 Models equipped with the VIN F 2.2L engine may experience an engine tick and misfire. If the engine was built in Tonawanda, New York between 9/14/2004 - 9/16/2004, this may be the result of a broken valve spring.

If this condition is encountered, use either of the following methods to determine when and where the engine was built:

TO USE GMVIS:

Enter the VIN number in GMVIS and select the "Vehicle Component" hyper-link at the top of the page. Refer to the Engine Assembly section of this list and note the engine Traceability and Source Plant information. If the engine Traceability number is 40914XXXX - 40916XXXX and the Source Plant is Tonawanda, New York, inspect for a broken valve spring

TO USE THE BROADCAST CODE LABEL:

Inspect the Broadcast Code Label as shown in SI document number 1044185. If the Engine Assembly Plant Code is a T and the engine was manufactured between 9/14/2004 - 9/16/2004, inspect for a broken valve spring.

If a broken valve spring is found, replace all 16 valve springs, using existing GMSPO part numbers. To do this, refer to the SI "Valve Stem Oil Seal and Valve Spring Replacement" procedure. It is necessary to remove BOTH camshafts as mentioned in Step 1 before proceeding with the rest of the procedure.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
