Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Caution in the Preface section.

Notice: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Notice in the Preface section.

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.
  4. Remove the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.

  5. Object Number: 142296  Size: SH
  6. Clean the dirt and foreign material around the wheel cylinder.
  7. Remove the bleeder valve (1).
  8. Remove the brake hose banjo bolt. Cap the brake hose fitting to prevent brake fluid leakage and contamination.
  9. Important: Do not reuse the brake hose fitting gaskets.

  10. Remove and discard the brake hose fitting gaskets.
  11. Remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolts (2).
  12. Remove the wheel cylinder (3).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 142296  Size: SH
  1. Apply LOCTITE® GM P/N 12345382, (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the wheel cylinder shoulder face that contacts the backing plate.
  2. Position the wheel cylinder (3) to the backing plate.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the wheel cylinder mounting bolts (2).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel cylinder mounting bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  6. Assemble the 2 new brake hose fitting gaskets and the brake hose banjo bolt to the brake hose.
  7. Install the brake hose assembly to the wheel cylinder.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the brake hose banjo bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Install the bleeder valve (1).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the valve to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  11. Install the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.
  12. Adjust the drum brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment.
  13. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.
  14. Bleed the brake hydraulic system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes.
  15. Adjust the parking brake. Refer to Parking Brake Adjustment in Park Brake.
  16. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
