  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn ON the radio.
  3. Operate all of the steering wheel controls.

Do all of the steering wheel controls operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Caution: When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling . Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disable the SIR. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
  3. Disconnect the steering wheel controls, steering column in-line connector.
  4. Measure the resistance from the radio on signal circuit of the steering wheel controls to the remote radio control signal circuit of the steering wheel controls.
  5. Press the following steering wheel controls and record the resistance values:

Do the recorded resistances measure near the specified values?

Volume Up-1270 ohms

Volume Down-1564 ohms

Play-1912 ohms

Mute-2387 ohms

Seek Up-3102 ohms

Seek Down-4282 ohms

Band-6652 ohms

Pre-Set-13,580 ohms

Test the radio on signal circuit between the radio and steering wheel controls for an open, short to ground, or short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the remote radio control signal circuit between the radio and steering wheel controls for an open, short to ground, or a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the steering wheel controls. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
