Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement Drum Brakes

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Notice: Do not hammer on brake drum as damage to the bearing could result.

  4. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  5. Disconnect the rear ABS wheel speed sensor wire connector.

  7. Remove the bolts from the wheel bearing/hub assembly.
  8. Remove the hub and bearing assembly (4) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the wheel bearing and hub assembly (4) to steering knuckle (2) bolts.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 85 N·m (62 lb ft).

  3. Connect the rear ABS wheel speed sensor wire connector.
  4. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  5. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  6. Lower the vehicle.

Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement Disc Brakes

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  4. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever. Refer to Parking Brake Front Cable Replacement in Park Brake.

  5. Object Number: 479653  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor harness.
  7. Remove the wheel hub assembly bolts.
  8. Remove the wheel hub assembly (8) from the knuckle.
  9. Remove the mounting bolts from the rear of the wheel hub assembly (8).
  10. Remove the wheel hub assembly (8) from the backing plate (4).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the wheel hub assembly (8) to the backing plate (4).
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the mounting bolts to the rear of the wheel hub assembly (8).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  5. Install the wheel hub assembly (8) to the knuckle.
  6. Install the wheel hub assembly bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 85 N·m (62 lb ft).

  8. Connect the wheel speed sensor harness.
  9. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever. Refer to Parking Brake Front Cable Replacement in Park Brake.
  10. Install the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
