BY-PASSING INOP. FUEL DOOR RELEASE MECHANISM - INFO.

Subject: INFORMATION ON BYPASSING INOPERATIVE FUEL DOOR RELEASE MECHANISM Models Affected: 1992-93 GRAND AM MODELS

THIS BULLETIN CANCELS AND REPLACES BULLETIN 92-10-61 ISSUED 9/92. THIS BULLETIN IS BEING REVISED TO ADD THE 1993 MODEL. PLEASE DISCARD BULLETIN 92-10-61.

When the fuel door release mechanism is inoperative on 1992-93 N cars, there is no alternate release mechanism to open the fuel door.

An inoperative fuel door release mechanism could result from several causes:

1. The cable breaks. 2. The cable is not attached correctly or becomes detached. 3. The release handle breaks or does not function.

An inoperative door release mechanism can be bypassed using the following procedure.

1. Insert a plastic credit card or tongue depressor in the gap around the fuel filler door opening at the 9:00 o'clock position as shown in Figure 1.

2. Push the plastic credit card or tongue depressor into the opening approximately 1.5 inches. The fuel door should release and open.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
