SPECIAL POLICY: EXTERIOR PAINT ADHESION TO LOWER BODY

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1986 'N' Series Vehicles

CONDITION:

---------- A durability feature on 1986 'N' series vehicles is a chip resistant material applied to the lower portion of the car body, which is then covered by the car's paint finish. We have found that on some of these cars, the adhesion between the two materials maybe inadequate. On the affected cars, this condition may result in flaking or chipping of the paint finish from these lower portions of the car's body.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1986 'N' series vehicles within the following VIN breakpoints:

DIVISION PLANT BEGINNING UP TO AND INCLUDING -------- ----- --------- ------------------- Pontiac Lansing (C) GC607202 GC612786

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners of vehicles involved in this Special Policy will be notified by General Motors of Canada Limited.

SPECIAL POLICY ADJUSTMENT

General Motors of Canada Limited will refinish all areas of the lower portion of the vehicle body in which the chip resistant material was applied should those areas exhibit excessive chipping or flaking of the basecoat/clearcoat finish.

This Special Policy covers both materials and labour for a period of three (3) years from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of mileage.

This "Special Policy Adjustment Bulletin" should be filed in the 3-ring binder furnished the dealer by General Motors of Canada Limited.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the basecoat/clearcoat from areas as shown in figure 1. In some cases the basecoat/clearcoat can be effectively removed by using an air hose to blow it away from the chip resistant material.

NOTE: Every effort should be made to leave as much of the chip resistant material as possible. Therefore, removal of the basecoat/clearcoat by sanding should be done very carefully using 400 paper and finishing with 600 paper.

2. Refinish areas by using basecoat/clearcoat application procedures, following the paint manufacturer's label directions.

The following materials or their equivalent are recommended:

Centari Basecoats Centari Basemaker - 82805 Centari 780S Clearcoat Centari 782S Catalyst

Lacquer materials may also be used for this repair where local conditions require it.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
