DIGITAL CLUSTERS/REPLACEMENT SERVICE INFORMATION

"PLEASE DISREGARD PREVIOUS BULLETIN 86-SM-10, DUE TO TEXT REVISIONS." THE QUARTZ ELECTRIC SPEEDOMETER IS WARRANTED UNDER THE "NEW CAR { LIMITED WARRANTY" FOR 12 MONTHS OR 12,000 MILES, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST. FOR THE 1986 MODEL YEAR, FIREBIRD, SUNBIRD, AND GRAND AM CARS ARE PRODUCED WITH INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS MANUFACTURED BY NIPPONDENSO OR AC SPARK PLUG DIVISION ALL OF WHICH ARE SERVICED BY AC-DELCO. IF A MALFUNCTIONING QUARTZ SPEEDOMETER IS ENCOUNTERED, THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED FOR OBTAINING A REPLACEMENT. (UPS NEXT DAY AIR, APPROXIMATELY $25.) THE DEALER WILL BE INVOICED FOR THE SPEEDOMETER THIS BILLING WILL BE CANCELLED UPON RECEIPT OF THE INOPERATIVE SPEEDOMETER AND A PROPERLY COMPLETED AC-DELCO WARRANTY FORM (ACD 1078A). DEALERS ARE TO RETURN THE MALFUNCTIONING SPEEDOMETER PREPAID VIA UPS IN THE ORIGINAL REUSABLE CONTAINER TO AVOID DAMAGE. FAILURE TO RETURN THE INOPERATIVE SPEEDOMETER IN THE SPECIAL REUSABLE CONTAINER MAY RESULT IN A $10 CONTAINER REPLACEMENT FEE. ANY UNIT THAT IS STOLEN OR DAMAGED BY ACCIDENT IS TO BE REPLACED THROUGH NORMAL WDDGM PART ORDERING PROCEDURES. DEALERS ARE TO FILL IN THE RED SHADED AREAS OF THE AC-DELCO WARRANTY CLAIM FOR (ACD 1078A) AND FORWARD ALL COPIES WITH THE UNIT TO THE SERVICE CENTER. THE DEALER COPY OF THE FORM WILL BE RETURNED WHEN REPAIRS ARE COMPLETED. AN ADDITIONAL 0.2 HOUR ADMINISTRATIVE ALLOWANCE WILL BE PAID WHEN UNITS ARE REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. THIS ADDITIONAL TIME SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE PUBLISHED TIME ALLOWANCE IN THE LABOR TIME GUIDE AND ENTERED IN THE "LABOR HOURS" COLUMN OF THE PONTIAC WARRANTY CLAIM FORM. THE DEALER IS TO SUBMIT A PONTIAC WARRANTY CLAIM FOR THE R AND R OF THE UNIT AND FREIGHT CHARGES. THE DEALER COPY OF THE FORM ACD 1078A AND THE FREIGHT RECEIPT OR SHIPPING INVOICE ARE TO BE ATTACHED TO THE REPAIR ORDER SCRAPPING COPY, WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE SCRAPPING COPY OF THE PONTIAC WARRANTY CLAIM. IDENTIFICATION OF 1986 SKYLARK AND SOMERSET DIGITAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOR EXCHANGE REQUESTS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITHOUT REMOVAL OF THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TRIM PLATE. THE LENS HAS A WHITE TRIM LINE THAT SURROUNDS THE CLUSTER. THE POSITIONING OF THIS LINE AT THE TOP OF THE CLUSTER IN RELATION TO THE SWITCH KNOBS IS DIFFERENT BETWEEN THE AC SPARK PLUG AND YAZAKI CLUSTERS. THE FOLLOWING DIMENSIONS ARE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE TOP OF THE FUEL GAGE AND GAGE KNOBS AND THE WHITE LINE TRIM AT THE TOP OF THE CLUSTER: AC SPARK PLUG CLUSTER: 1 - 2 MM YAZAKI CLUSTER: 7 - 8 MM TO IDENTIFY BETWEEN 1ST DESIGN AND 2ND DESIGN AC SPARK PLUG CLUSTERS, A KNOB WILL STILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED AND CHECKED. PLEASE NOTE THIS INFORMATION ON THE LAST TWO PAGES OF THE SERVICE BULLETIN 86-8-3, DATED NOVEMBER 1985.
