METHOD TO REMOVE PUSH ROD COVERS W/O COVER DAMAGE

A METHOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO REMOVE THE PUSH ROD COVER FROM 2.5L L4 ENGINES WITHOUT DAMAGE, USING COMPONENTS ALREADY ON THE ENGINE. ALL EXCEPT "N" CAR TO REMOVE THE COVER, UNSCREW THE FOUR NUTS FROM THE COVER ATTACHING STUDS, REVERSE TWO OF THE NUTS SO THE WASHERS FACE OUTWARD AND SCREW THEM BACK ONTO THE INNER TWO STUDS. ASSEMBLE THE TWO REMAINING NUTS TO THE SAME TWO INNER STUDS WITH WASHERS FACING INWARD. USING A SMALL WRENCH ON THE INNER NUT, ON EACH STUD, JAM THE TWO NUTS TIGHTLY TOGETHER. AGAIN USING THE SMALL WRENCH, ON THE INNER NUT, UNSCREW THE STUDS UNTIL THE COVER BREAKS LOOSE. "N" CAR TO REMOVE THE COVER, REPEAT THE ABOVE OPERATION USING TWO STANDARD 6MM NUTS INSTEAD OF TWO ORIGINAL NUTS ON #2 STUD. THIS STUD IS TOO SHORT TO USE NUTS WITH WASHERS. AFTER BREAKING THE COVER LOOSE, REMOVE THE JAMMED NUTS FROM EACH STUD. REMOVE THE COVER FROM THE STUDS. EXAMINE THE STUD AND RUBBER WASHER ASSEMBLY AND REPLACE IF EITHER STUD OR WASHER IS DAMAGED (SEE ILLUSTRATION FOR PART NUMBERS). REASSEMBLE THE TWO STUDS TO THE MIDDLE TWO POSITIONS AND TORQUE TO 10 NM (90 IN-LB.). USE APPLICABLE LABOR OPERATION NUMBER AND LABOR TIME. ALL EXCEPT 'N' 'N' 10035977 10038184 PUSH ROD COVER STUDS

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
