INOPERATIVE HORN NEW HORN PAD CONTACT ASSEMBLY

1985-87 GRAND AM, GRAND PRIX, AND BONNEVILLE MODELS

The vehicles outlined above contain a horn contact assembly as shown in Figure 1. In some instances, the spring, eyelet, and insulator assembly may disengage from the cam tower causing a loss of horn operation.

To repair the above condition, follow the procedure outlined below:

1. Obtain service parts 17988622 (horn pad contact assembly) and 9769448 (lead in wire assembly).

2. Remove horn pad. The horn pad contact assembly will come off with the pad, and can be snapped off.

3. Remove the spring, eyelet, and insulator.

4. Insert the lead in wire assembly into the cam tower as shown in Figure 2, and rotate clockwise until locked.

5. Using the new horn pad contact assembly, slide the blade end of the lead wire onto the horn pad contact.

6. Reassemble the horn pad and test operation.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
