Diagnostic Aids

    • By using the power sunshade switch, the sunshade can be operated independently of the sunroof. However, the power sunroof motor/actuator monitors the positions of both the sunshade and sunroof and limits the closing of the sunshade, as well as the opening of the sunroof, based upon the current positions of the two components. The power sunroof motor/actuator will not allow the sunroof to be opened more than the sunshade. When the sunroof is fully closed, the sunshade switch may be used to fully open or fully close the sunshade. However, when the sunroof is fully open, the sunshade switch can only close the sunshade to its first closed position, in which the sunshade and sunroof are equally closed.
    • If a power sunshade switch open or close signal circuit shorts to voltage, it is likely that the circuit will open permanently inside the switch. If you are replacing the switch due to an open internal circuit, be sure to test the corresponding external circuit for a short to battery.
    •  The power sunshade motor/actuator assembly contains the sunshade electronic control module. The individual components are not serviced separately.
    • The power sunshade motor/actuator is also known as the power sunroof slave module.
    • The power sunroof motor/actuator assembly contains the sunroof electronic control module. The individual components are not serviced separately.
    • The power sunroof motor/actuator is also known as the power sunroof master control module.

DEFINITION: The vehicle is equipped with RPO C3Y, panoramic sunroof. The power sunshade is inoperative in one, or both directions when operated from the power sunshade switch. The power sunroof operates normally.

Perform the following actions in order to verify the complaint.

    • Operate the sunroof to the closed position.
    • With the power sunshade switch, attempt to operate the sunshade through its full range of functions.

Does the sunshade operate normally?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the harness connector of the sunshade switch.
  3. Turn On the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. With a test lamp connected to battery positive voltage, probe the ground circuit of the harness connector.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 4

Is the power sunshade in the completely closed position in which it completely covers the sunroof?

Important: If the 3-amp jumper wire fuse opens when the jumper wire is connected, test the circuit for a short to ground.

    • Briefly connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the front sunshade switch open signal circuit and the ground circuit of the harness connector.
    • Briefly connect the 3-amp fused jumper wire between the front sunshade switch close signal circuit and the ground circuit of the harness connector.

Did the power sunshade move to the appropriate open and closed positions?

Important: If the 3-amp jumper wire fuse opens when the jumper wire is connected, test the circuit for a short to ground.

    • Briefly connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the front sunshade switch close signal circuit and the ground circuit of the harness connector.
    • Briefly connect the 3-amp fused jumper wire between the front sunshade switch open signal circuit and the ground circuit of the harness connector.

Did the power sunshade move to the appropriate closed and open positions?

Go to Step 9

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the harness connector of the sunroof motor/actuator.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Test the appropriate sunshade switch open or close circuit for the following conditions:
  5. • An open
    • A high resistance
    • A short to ground
    • A short to voltage

Did you find and correct the condition?

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the sunroof motor/actuator. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .
