Cruise Control Inoperative/Malfunctioning 3 spoke steering wheel

Circuit/System Description

The cruise control switch is an input to the body control module (BCM). The BCM monitors the cruise control switch signal circuit in order to detect when the driver has requested to perform a cruise control function. The BCM detects a specific voltage signal on the cruise control switch signal circuit when a switch is applied.

Circuit/System Verification

Important: 

   • Electromagnetic interference (EMI) on the speed sensor signal circuit may cause erratic cruise control operation.
   • Repair any brake system related symptoms and DTCs before performing this diagnostic.

Engine ON, while rotating the steering wheel to both steering stops, observe the scan tool Cruise Control Switch parameter in the BCM while pressing the various cruise control switches. The reading should be toggle between On, Off, Resume, Set and Cancel accordingly with the depressed switches as the steering wheel is turned.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement.
  2. Disconnect the harness connector at the steering wheel controls switch - left.
  3. Ignition ON, measure for 10 volts or greater between the cruise control switch supply voltage circuit terminal 4 and ground.
  4. If less than the specified value, test the cruise control switch supply voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  5. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector C2 at the BCM.
  6. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1.0 ohm of resistance between the steering wheel controls switch - left terminal 5 and the BCM C2 terminal 61.
  7. If greater than the specified range, test the cruise control switch signal circuit for an open/high resistance.
  8. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the BCM C2 terminal 61 and ground.
  9. If less than the specified value, test the cruise control switch signal circuit for a short to ground.
  10. Connect the harness connector C2 at the BCM.
  11. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the cruise control switch signal circuit terminal 5 and ground.
  12. If the test lamp illuminates, test the cruise control switch signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
  13. Test the component. If the circuits and the component tests are normal, replace the BCM.

Component Testing

Important: The cruise control ON/OFF switch must be ON in order to properly measure the resistance of the ON, SET - , and the RES + switches.

Steering Wheel Controls - Left

  1. Ignition OFF, remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement .
  2. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the steering wheel controls - left.
  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 4 and 5 (4 and 6 for the Cancel Switch) at the cruise control switch side of the connector. Individually activate and hold each cruise control function switch and compare the resistance reading to the values for the ON/OFF, SET - , the RES +, and the Cancel switches.
  4. If any of the resistance measurements for the OFF, ON, - SET, + RES, and Cancel switches are not within the listed resistance values, replace the steering wheel controls - left switch assembly.

  6. Disconnect the harness connector at the steering wheel controls switch - right.
  7. Ignition ON, cruise control ON, measure for 10 volts or greater between the cruise control switch supply voltage circuit terminal 6 (UK3) or 3 (non UK3) and ground.
  8. If less than the specified value, test the cruise control switch supply voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance between the steering wheel controls switch - left and the steering wheel controls switch - right.
  9. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector C2 at the BCM.
  10. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1.0 ohm of resistance between the steering wheel controls switch - right terminal 4 (non UK3) or 7 (UK3) and the BCM C2 terminal 61.
  11. If greater than the specified range, test the cruise control switch signal circuit for an open/high resistance.
  12. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the BCM C2 terminal 61 and ground.
  13. If less than the specified value, test the cruise control switch signal circuit for a short to ground.
  14. Connect the harness connector C2 at the BCM.
  15. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the cruise control switch signal circuit terminal 4 (non UK3) or 7 (UK3) and ground.
  16. If the test lamp illuminates, test the cruise control switch signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
  17. Test the component. If the circuits and the component tests are normal, replace the BCM.

Component Testing

Steering Wheel Controls - Left

  1. Ignition OFF, remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement .
  2. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the steering wheel controls - left.
  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 5 and 6 (UK3) or 3 and 4 (non UK3) at the cruise control switch side of the connector. Compare the resistance readings to the values for the ON and OFF switch.
  4. If the resistance measurements for the ON and OFF switch are not within the listed resistance values, replace the steering wheel controls - left switch assembly.

Steering Wheel Controls - Right

  1. Ignition OFF, remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement .
  2. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the steering wheel controls - right.
  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 6 and 7 (UK3) or 3 and 4 (non UK3) at the cruise control switch side of the connector. Individually activate and hold each cruise control function switch and compare the resistance reading to the values for the SET -, the RES + and the default value.
  4. If any of the resistance measurements for the - SET, + RES, and the default value are not within the listed resistance values, replace the steering wheel controls - right switch assembly.
