Power Steering Gear Outlet Pipe/Hose Replacement LZ4, LZ9

Tools Required

J 44586 Power Steering Gear Oil Seal Remover/Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the intake manifold cover. Refer to Intake Manifold Cover Replacement for 3.5L engine or Intake Manifold Cover Replacement for 3.9L engine.

  2. Object Number: 1775613  Size: SH
  3. Compress the clamp (1) and disconnect the power steering reservoir inlet pipe (2) from the power steering gear outlet pipe (3).
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  5. Remove the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .

  7. Remove the 2 power steering gear inlet pipe routing pin-style retainers (1) from the right side of the frame.

  8. Object Number: 1776551  Size: SH
  9. Remove the 2 power steering gear inlet pipe routing pin-style retainers from the front of the frame.

  10. Object Number: 1775901  Size: SH
  11. Remove the power steering gear inlet/outlet pipe retaining bolt (1), disconnect the inlet pipe (2) and outlet pipe (4) from the steering gear (3).
  12. Remove the power steering gear outlet pipe from the vehicle.

  14. Extract the power steering gear oil seal (1) from the power steering gear using the J 44586 (2) with the aid of a flat-bladed tool (3) for additional leverage.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1492057  Size: SH
  1. Install the NEW power steering gear oil seal (1) to the power steering gear using the seal installation end of the J 44586 (2).

  2. Object Number: 1492058  Size: SH
  3. Ensure the power steering gear oil seals (1) are fully seated in the power steering gear.
  4. Position the power steering gear outlet pipe to the vehicle.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  6. Connect the inlet pipe (2) and outlet pipe (4) to the steering gear (3) and install the power steering gear inlet/outlet pipe retaining bolt (1). Prior to tightening the retaining bolt (1), rotate the outlet pipe (4) clockwise/down so it touches the inlet pipe (2). Verify the hoses are still touching after the retaining bolt is tight.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the retaining bolt to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  8. Install the 2 power steering gear inlet pipe routing pin-style retainers to the front of the frame.

  9. Object Number: 1776495  Size: SH
  10. Install the 2 power steering gear inlet pipe routing pin-style retainers (1) to the right side of the frame.
  11. Install the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  12. Lower the vehicle.

  14. Place the clamp (1) on the power steering gear outlet pipe (3) and install the gear outlet pipe (3) to the power steering reservoir inlet pipe (2).
  15. Install the intake manifold cover. Refer to Intake Manifold Cover Replacement for 3.5L engine or Intake Manifold Cover Replacement for 3.9L engine.
  16. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .

Power Steering Gear Outlet Pipe/Hose Replacement LY7

Tools Required

J 44586 Power Steering Gear Oil Seal Remover/Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove as much power steering fluid from the remote power steering fluid reservoir.
  2. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  3. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  4. Remove the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .

  6. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose bolt and disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose and the power steering gear outlet hose from the steering gear.

  7. Object Number: 1811905  Size: SH
  8. Compress the power steering gear outlet hose clamp (1) and disconnect the power steering gear outlet hose (2) from the power steering reservoir inlet hose (3).

  9. Object Number: 1812661  Size: SH
  10. Remove the 2 power steering gear outlet pipe hose retainers from the right side of the front frame.

  11. Object Number: 1812634  Size: SH
  12. Remove the 2 power steering gear outlet hose retainers from the front of the front frame.
  13. Remove the power steering gear outlet hose from the vehicle.

  14. Object Number: 1492056  Size: SH
  15. Extract the steering gear oil seals (1) from the steering gear using remover/installer J 44586 (2) with the aid of a flat-bladed tool (3) for additional leverage.

Installation Procedure

    Important: Start all of the nuts and bolts by hand before finalizing any of the torques.

  1. Install the NEW steering gear oil seals (1) to the steering gear using remover/installer J 44586 (2).

  2. Object Number: 1492058  Size: SH
  3. Ensure the steering gear oil seals (1) are fully seated in the steering gear.
  4. Notice: The inlet and outlet hoses must not be twisted during installation. Do not bend or distort the inlet or outlet hoses to make installation easier. Failure to follow these procedures could result in component damage.

  5. Position the power steering gear outlet hose to the vehicle.
  6. Install the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .
  7. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  8. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose and the power steering gear outlet hose to the steering gear and install the power steering gear inlet hose bolt.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  10. Compress the power steering gear outlet hose clamp (1) and connect the power steering gear outlet hose (2) to the power steering reservoir inlet hose (3).

  11. Object Number: 1812634  Size: SH
  12. Install the 2 power steering gear outlet hose retainers to the front of the front frame.

  13. Object Number: 1812661  Size: SH
  14. Install the 2 power steering gear outlet pipe hose retainers to the right side of the front frame.
  15. Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  16. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  17. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
