Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

Does the starter relay click?

  1. With a scan tool, observe the Crank Request Signal parameter in the powertrain control module (PCM) data list.
  2. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the scan tool display that the Crank Request Signal parameter is Yes?

  1. Disconnect the starter relay.
  2. Connect a test light between the starter relay coil supply voltage circuit and the starter relay coil control circuit of the starter relay.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the test light illuminate?

  1. Connect a test light between a battery positive voltage circuit and the starter relay coil control circuit of the starter relay.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the test light illuminate?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Disconnect the park neutral position (PNP) switch.
  3. Connect a test light between the ignition 1 voltage circuit and a good ground.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper between the starter relay coil supply voltage circuit and the ignition 1 voltage circuit of the PNP switch.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the starter relay.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the starter relay and a good ground.

Connect a 30-amp fused jumper between the battery positive voltage circuit and the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit of the starter relay.

Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Verify that the transmission is in Park or Neutral.
  4. With a scan tool, observe the IMS/TR Sw. parameter in the transmission control module (TCM) data list.

Does the scan tool display Park or Neutral?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. With a scan tool, observe the Starter Relay Command parameter in the engine control module (ECM) data list.
  3. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the scan tool display ON?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. With a scan tool, observe the Power Mode parameter in the BCM data list.
  3. Turn the ignition to the START position.

  1. Disconnect the starter relay.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the starter relay coil and a good ground.

  1. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the starter relay coil and the control circuit of the crank relay.
  2. Turn the ignition to the START position.
