Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1238979  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement .
  4. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement .
  5. Remove the right spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Replacement .
  6. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the evaporative emission (EVAP) purge valve.
  7. Remove the EVAP purge valve.
  8. Remove the ignition coil bracket with the coils. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement .
  9. Remove the ignition coil bracket studs.
  10. Remove the vacuum hose from the grommet in the right valve rocker arm cover.

  11. Object Number: 61834  Size: SH

    Important: Valve rocker arm cover gasket and sealant must be carefully trimmed away from the lower intake manifold gasket. Failure to do so will damage the lower intake manifold gasket, causing a severe oil leak.

  12. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  13. Important: When removing the valve rocker arm cover, ensure the gasket stays in place attached to the cylinder head.

  14. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
  15. Bump the end of the valve rocker cover with the palm of your hand or a soft rubber mallet if the cover adheres to the cylinder head.

  16. Trim the valve gasket and sealant away from the lower intake manifold gasket at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joints (1).
  17. Remove the valve cover gasket.
  18. Clean the sealing surface on the cylinder head with degreaser.
  19. Clean the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 190588  Size: SH

    Important: Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers .

  1. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joints (1).

  2. Object Number: 61834  Size: SH
  3. Install a new gasket to the valve rocker arm cover. Ensure that the gasket is properly seated in the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  4. Install the right valve rocker arm cover.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

    Important: Use an alternating criss-cross pattern when tightening the valve rocker cover bolts. Failure to do so may result in oil leakage from the valve cover due to improper seating of the gasket.

  6. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  8. Install the vacuum hose to the grommet in the right valve rocker arm cover.
  9. Install the ignition coil bracket studs.
  10. Install the ignition coil bracket with coils. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement .
  11. Install the EVAP purge valve.
  12. Connect the vacuum hoses to the EVAP purge valve.
  13. Install the right spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Replacement .
  14. Install the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement .
  15. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement .
  16. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  17. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
