Condition

Some owners may comment on a squeak coming from the steering wheel when turning.

Cause

The bottom two mounting tabs (1) or tangs on the backside of the air bag module may contact the inner steering wheel.

Correction

Apply adhesive flocking tape (insulating material), P/N 12378189 (P/N 10953434 in Canada), to the mounting tabs or tangs using the following procedure:

Important: For additional information, see the SIR sub-section of Restraints and the Instrument Panel and Console sub-section of Body and Accessories in the appropriate Service Manual.

  1. Remove the fuse cover and remove the SIR fuse.
  2. Remove the left instrument panel closeout or insulator.
  3. Remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and disconnect the driver's air bag module connector located at the base of the steering column.
  4. Remove the two screws attaching the steering wheel air bag module to the steering wheel.
  5. Remove the air bag module from the steering wheel, remove the CPA and disconnect the electrical connector.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector for the radio controls (if equipped).
  7. Cut two pieces of adhesive flocking tape to a size of 15 mm (5/8 in) by 20 mm (3/4 in).
  8. Using a clean dry shop towel, remove any film or residue from the two mounting tabs or tangs on the backside of the air bag module.

  10. Remove the backing material and install one piece of adhesive flocking tape (2) on each of the mounting tabs (1) or tangs as shown.
  11. Connect the electrical connector for the radio controls (if equipped).
  12. Connect the air bag module connector, install the CPA and position the air bag module on the steering wheel.
  13. Install the attaching screws and tighten to 2.8 N·m (25 lb in).
  14. Connect the driver's air bag electrical connector located at the base of the steering column and install the CPA.
  15. Install the left instrument panel closeout or insulator.
  16. Install the SIR fuse and install the fuse cover.
  17. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and verify that the AIR BAG warning lamp flashes seven (7) times and goes out.
