  1. Place the ignition in the RUN position.
  2. Set the park brake.
  3. Apply the brake pedal.
  4. Place the transmission in the REVERSE position.

Are the back up lamps illuminated?

  1. Leave the ignition in the RUN position.
  2. Leave the park brake set.
  3. Continue to apply the brake pedal.
  4. Leave the transmission in the REVERSE position.
  5. Connect a test lamp between connector C400 terminal F and ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a test lamp between the backup lamp, LH connector terminals A and G. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Determine if the vehicle has a manual transmission or an automatic transmission.

Connect a test lamp between the backup lamp, LH connector terminals A and ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Repair a poor connection or an open in the supply voltage circuit of the backup lamps. Refer to Wiring Repairs or Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Connect a test lamp between the backup lamp switch connector terminal B and ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Connect a test lamp between the park/neutral position switch connector terminal C and ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

  1. Place the transmission in the PARK position.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  3. Disconnect the backup lamp switch.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  5. Connect a test lamp between the backup lamp connector terminal A and ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Replace the backup lamp switch. Refer to Backup Lamp Switch Replacement in Manual Transmission - M49 or Backup Lamp Switch Replacement in Manual Transmission - MM6.

Repair an open or a poor connection in the ignition 3 voltage circuit of the backup lamp switch or the park/neutral position switch. Refer to Wiring Repairs or Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Connect a test lamp between the park/neutral position switch connector terminal D and ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.
