J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor

Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

•	Air bag deployment

•	Personal injury

•	Unnecessary SIR system repairs

In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:

•	Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.

•	If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

1. Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
2. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
3. Remove the wave washer.
4. Compress the shaft lock using J 23653-SIR .
5. Remove the bearing retainer (1) from the steering shaft assembly and dispose of it.
6. Remove J 23653-SIR .



7. Remove the following 3 parts from the steering shaft assembly:

7.1.	Remove the shaft lock shield assembly (1).

7.2.	Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).

7.3.	Remove the upper bearing spring (3).




8. Remove the following 2 parts from the steering shaft assembly:

8.1.	Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (1).

8.2.	Remove the inner race (2).
