Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 29714-A Servo Cover Depressor


    Object Number: 14478  Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  3. Remove the torque arm at the transmission. Refer to Torque Arm Replacement in Rear Suspension.
  4. Install a transmission jack and remove the transmission support. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  5. Remove the catalytic converter heat shield. Refer to Converter Heat Shield Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  6. Lower the transmission.
  7. Remove the oil pan bolt below and to the left of the 2-4 servo cover.
  8. Install the J 29714-A to the oil pan rail.

  10. Tighten the bolt on the J 29714-A to compress the servo cover.

  11. Object Number: 642680  Size: SH
  12. Remove the servo cover retaining ring.
  13. Loosen the bolt on the J 29714-A to release tension on the servo cover.

  14. Object Number: 645364  Size: SH
  15. Remove the servo cover and O-ring seal. If the cover is hung up on the seal, use a 90° pick (2) to pull and stretch the seal (1) out of the groove. Cut and remove the O-ring seal before removing the cover.

  16. Object Number: 642523  Size: SH
  17. Remove the 2-4 servo from the transmission.
  18. Inspect the 4th apply piston, 2-4 servo converter, 2nd apply piston, and the servo piston inner housing for the following defects:
  19. • Cracks
    • Scoring
    • Burrs and nicks

Installation Procedure

  1. Install new seals on the servo pistons and the servo cover.

  2. Object Number: 642523  Size: SH
  3. Install the 2-4 servo to the transmission.
  4. Install the servo cover and O-ring seal.

  5. Object Number: 14478  Size: SH
  6. Tighten the bolt on the J 29714-A to compress the servo cover.
  7. Install the servo cover retaining ring.
  8. Loosen the bolt on the J 29714-A to release tension on the servo cover.

  9. Object Number: 14478  Size: SH
  10. Remove the J 29714-A from the oil pan rail.
  11. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  12. Install the oil pan bolt below the 2-4 servo cover.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pan bolt to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  14. Raise the transmission.
  15. Install the catalytic converter heat shield. Refer to Converter Heat Shield Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  16. Install the transmission support. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  17. Remove the transmission jack.
  18. Install the torque arm to the transmission. Refer to Torque Arm Replacement in Rear Suspension.
  19. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  20. Lower the vehicle.
  21. Check the transmission fluid level.
  22. Important: It is recommended that the transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.

    Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, the ECM, PCM or TCM will need to relearn the TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned,

  23. Reset the TAP values. Refer to Adapt Function .
