SUBJECT: BORG-WARNER T56 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION BLOCKOUT/ NOTCHY FEEL DURING 1ST TO 4TH GEAR "COMPUTER AIDED GEAR SELECT" (SKIP SHIFT) MANEUVER (REPLACE LEVER, COMPUTER AIDED GEAR SELECT)

MODELS: 1993-96 CHEVROLET CAMARO 1993-96 PONTIAC FIREBIRD WITH T56 6-SPEED MANUAL (RPO MM6)

CONDITION:

YOU MAY RECEIVE COMMENTS CONCERNING A BLOCKOUT/NOTCHY FEEL DURING A 1ST TO 4TH GEAR "COMPUTER AIDED GEAR SELECT" (SKIP SHIFT) MANEUVER IN A BORG-WARNER T56 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION.

CAUSE:

COMPUTER AIDED GEAR SELECT (SKIP SHIFT) LEVER MAY BE SENSITIVE TO DIMENSIONAL STACK-UPS OF TRANSMISSION COMPONENTS.

CORRECTION:

VERIFY THAT THE 1ST TO 4TH GEAR SHIFT CONCERN OCCURS **ONLY** DURING A "COMPUTER AIDED GEAR SELECT" (SKIP SHIFT) MANEUVER. REFERENCE SECTION 7B10B OF THE APPROPRIATE "TRANSMISSION TRANSAXLE TRANSFER CASE UNIT REPAIR MANUAL" (TURM) FOR THE PARAMETERS THAT MUST BE MET IN ORDER FOR THE SKIP SHIFT FUNCTION TO OPERATE. THE ABOVE PARAMETERS APPLY TO ALL MODEL YEARS.

IMPORTANT: THE SKIP FUNCTION WILL NOT RESET UNLESS THE VEHICLE SPEED IS BELOW ONE (1) MILE PER HOUR (2 KMH).

THE SKIP SHIFT SOLENOID CAN ALSO BE ACTIVATED USING THE TECH I.

A REVISED COMPUTER AIDED GEAR SELECT LEVER (PART NO. 12534782) IS AVAILABLE TO ADDRESS THE 1ST TO 4TH GEAR SKIP SHIFT CONCERN. THE REVISED LEVER HAS A MODIFIED TRACK TO REDUCE SENSITIVITY TO DIMENSIONAL STACK-UPS OF OTHER COMPONENTS.

SERVICE PROCEDURES

1. REMOVE TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY PER APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS.

2. REMOVE DRAIN PLUG (101) AND DRAIN LUBRICANT FROM TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY. APPLY THREAD SEALANT (GM PART NO. 1052080) TO DRAIN PLUG (101) AND REINSTALL TO 18 N.M (13 LB. FT).

3. REMOVE BOLTS (97) AND SHIFTER ASSEMBLY (96).

4. REMOVE ROLL PIN (94) AND REAR OFFSET LEVER (93). (ISOLATOR CUP (95) MAY FALL OUT OF REAR OFFSET LEVER.)

5. REMOVE BOLTS (100) AND EXTENSION HOUSING (86).

6. REMOVE BOLTS (47) AND SHIFT DETENT COVER (48).

7. REMOVE AND DISCARD ROLL PIN (182). (THE ROLL PIN MAY HAVE TO BE BENT OUTWARD AS IT IS BEING DRIVEN OUT IN ORDER TO CLEAR THE FRONT OFFSET LEVER (51).)

8. REMOVE SKIP SHIFT LEVER (183) BY SLIPPING IT OFF THE SHIFT RAIL (153) AND OUT THROUGH THE TRANSMISSION CASE (44).

9. INSTALL **REVISED** SKIP SHIFT LEVER (183) (GM PART NO. 12534782) BY SLIPPING IT ONTO THE SHIFT RAIL (153) AND IN THROUGH THE TRANSMISSION CASE (44).

10. INSTALL **NEW** ROLL PIN (182) (GM PART NO. 454512).

11. CLEAN SEALING SURFACES AND APPLY SEALANT (GM PART NO. 12345739) TO SHIFT DETENT COVER (48) SEALING SURFACE.

12. INSTALL SHIFT DETENT COVER (48) AND BOLTS (47) TO 20 N.M (15 LB.FT).

13. CLEAN SEALING SURFACES AND APPLY SEALANT (GM PART NO. 12345739) TO EXTENSION HOUSING (86) SEALING SURFACE.

14. INSTALL EXTENSION HOUSING (86) AND BOLTS (100) TO 35 N.M (26 LB.FT).

IMPORTANT: APPLY THREAD SEALANT (GM PART NO. 1052080) TO THREADS OF BOLTS RETAINING TRANSMISSION BUMPER.

15. INSTALL REAR OFFSET LEVER (93) AND ROLL PIN (94). (DO NOT MISPLACE ISOLATOR CUP (95).)

16. CLEAN EXTENSION HOUSING (86) AND SHIFTER ASSEMBLY (96) SEALING SURFACES AND APPLY SEALANT (GM PART NO. 12345739) TO EXTENSION HOUSING (86).

17. INSTALL SHIFTER ASSEMBLY (96) AND BOLTS (97) TO 20 N.M (15 LB. FT.).

18. INSTALL TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY PER APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS.

19. REMOVE FILL PLUG (60) AND FILL TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY WITH LUBRICANT (DEXRON(R) III). APPROXIMATELY 3.9 LITERS (4.1 QT).

AFTER REFILL, FLUID LEVEL MUST BE CHECKED AS OUTLINED UNDER ON-VEHICLE SERVICE IN SECTION 7B OF THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL.

20. APPLY THREAD SEALANT (GM PART NO. 1052080) TO FILL PLUG (60) AND REINSTALL TO 18 N.M (13 LB.FT).
