EARLY BRAKE PAD REPLACEMENT NEW PADS WITH WEAR SENSOR

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1984-85 'P' Car ---------------

Some 1984 and early 1985 'P' cars may experience premature rear brake pad replacement. The wear sensor may make rotor contact within 16,000 km (10,000 miles).

Premature pad replacement is due to the wear sensor being located closer to the lining face. The sensor relocation was necessary because of a layer of thermo insulating material.

New pads are now available for service and production. The new pads do not have a thermal layer so the wear sensor is located further from the face of the lining material. The new brake pads entered production on December 10, 1984 with VIN 1G2PG379OFP202820.

The service kit (P/N 18011292) was not changed when the new pads entered service. The new pads can be identified by a date stamped in the end of the service kit box. Boxes impressed with Date Stamp 42751 or later include the new brake pads.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
