Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 28467-B Universal Engine Support Fixture
    • J 28467-94B Engine Support Adapters
    • J 42451-1 Engine Support Adapter
    • J 42478 Engine Support Fixture Adapters

    Object Number: 619132  Size: SH
  1. Install the J 28467-B in order to support the engine.
  2. 1.1. Remove the left and right inboard strut fasteners.
    1.2. Install the J 28467-94B  (3) adapters in place of inboard strut fasteners.
    1.3. Install the J 42478  (4) on top of the J 28467-94B  (3) adapters.
    1.4. Remove the left and right outboard strut fasteners.
    1.5. Install the adapters in place of the outboard strut fasteners.
    1.6. Install the J 28467-B  (1).
    1.7. Remove the generator pencil brace nut.
    1.8. Install the J 42451-1  (5) with the generator pencil brace fastener.
    1.9. Install the hook assemblies from the J 28467-B to the J 42451-1 on the right side of the engine and to the factory installed engine lift bracket on the left side of the engine.

  3. Ensure the engine support fixture is stable on the strut towers.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  5. Object Number: 105266  Size: SH
  6. Remove the fasteners retaining the rack and pinion at the left side of the vehicle.
  7. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  8. Remove the engine splash shield.
  9. Separate the ball joints from the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
  10. Remove the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.
  11. Remove the brackets retaining the power steering lines (1,2) at the engine frame.
  12. Remove the brackets retaining the transmissions cooler lines to the engine frame.
  13. Remove the fastener retaining the rack and pinion at the right side of the vehicle.

  15. Remove the fastener retaining the front engine mount to the engine frame.

  16. Object Number: 464428  Size: SH
  17. Remove the fasteners retaining the right transaxle mount to the engine frame.

  18. Object Number: 333761  Size: SH
  19. Support the engine frame with suitable jack stands.

  20. Object Number: 105376  Size: SH
  21. Remove the engine frame insulator fasteners (3) retaining the engine frame (2) to the vehicle.
  22. Lower the engine frame (2) from the vehicle.

  24. Separate the engine frame insulators from the engine frame:
  25. 17.1. Remove the bolts (2) from the engine frame (1).
    17.2. Remove the lower insulator retainer (3) from the lower insulator (4).
    17.3. Remove the lower insulator (4) from the engine frame (1).
    17.4. Remove the retainer (7) and the upper spacer (6) from the upper insulator (5).
    17.5. Remove the upper insulator (5) from the engine frame (1).

Installation Procedure

  1. Assemble the engine frame insulators to the engine frame:
  2. 1.1. Install the upper insulator (5) from the engine frame (1).
    1.2. Install the retainer (7) and the upper spacer (6) from the upper insulator (5).
    1.3. Install the lower insulator (4) from the engine frame (1).
    1.4. Install the lower insulator retainer (3) from the lower insulator (4).
    1.5. Install the fasteners (2) from the engine frame (1).

  3. Using dowel pins in the alignment holes (1), align the engine frame (2) with the vehicle.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the engine frame insulator fasteners (3) to retain the engine frame (2) to the vehicle.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 191 N·m (141 lb ft).

  7. Remove the jack stands supporting the engine frame.

  8. Object Number: 464428  Size: SH
  9. Install the nuts to retain the rear transmission mount to the bracket. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement in Automatic Transaxle -- 4T65-E.

  10. Object Number: 105510  Size: SH
  11. Install the fastener in order to retain the front engine mount to the engine frame. Refer to in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.

  12. Object Number: 105266  Size: SH
  13. Install the fasteners in order to retain the rack and pinion to the engine frame. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement in Power Steering System.
  14. Install the brackets in order to retain the transmission cooler lines to the engine frame.
  15. Install the brackets in order to retain the power steering lines (1,2) at the engine frame. Refer to Power Steering Pressure Pipe/Hose Replacement in Power Steering System.
  16. Install the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.
  17. Install the ball joints to the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
  18. Install the engine splash shield.
  19. Install the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  20. Object Number: 619132  Size: SH
  21. Remove the J 28467-B supporting the engine.
  22. Lower the vehicle.
  23. Test drive the vehicle in order to ensure there are no performance issues.
