ROUGH IDLE OR NO START DIAGNOSIS

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1988 C, E, H CARS EQUIPPED WITH 3800 ENGINE (VIN CODE C)

The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system should be checked for leaks whenever a condition of "rough idle" or "no start" is being diagnosed. The PCV system connection from the grommet to the intake manifold should be checked for separation. The hose should also be inspected for a split in the hose between the valve and intake runner or a condition of an incorrectly routed hose.

If the PCV system inspection shows the system to be functional, diagnosis should continue with Chart A-3 (engine cranks but won't run) of Section 6E3 of either the applicable 1988 New Product Information Manual or the applicable 1988 Chassis Service Manual.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
