Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement Drum Brake

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement in Drum Brakes.

  4. Object Number: 813284  Size: SH
  5. Remove and discard the wheel bearing/hub bolts.
  6. Remove the wheel bearing/hub.

  7. Object Number: 230412  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (2).

  2. Object Number: 813284  Size: SH
  3. Install the wheel bearing/hub.
  4. Caution: These fasteners MUST be replaced with new fasteners anytime they become loose or are removed. Failure to replace these fasteners after they become loose or are removed may cause loss of vehicle control and personal injury.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install NEW wheel bearing/hub bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel bearing/hub bolts to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  7. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  8. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Lower the vehicle.

Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement DiscBrake

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  3. Inspect the ball joint. Refer to Ball Joint Inspection .
  4. Disconnect the sensor lead.
  5. If equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD) remove the wheel drive shaft nut. Refer to Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .

  6. Object Number: 809968  Size: SH
  7. Remove the wheel bearing/hub assembly knuckle bolts (1).

  8. Object Number: 809973  Size: SH
  9. Remove the wheel bearing/hub assembly (1) from the knuckle (2).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 809973  Size: SH
  1. Install the wheel bearing/hub assembly (1) on to the knuckle (2).
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 809968  Size: SH
  3. Install the bolts (1) into the wheel bearing/hub assembly.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel bearing/hub bolts to 130 N·m (96 lb ft).

  5. Install the wheel drive shaft into the wheel bearing and tighten the nut. Refer to Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 260 N·m (192 lb ft).

  7. Connect the sensor lead.
  8. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  9. Lower the vehicle.
