Test Description

The step below refers to the test step on the diagnostic table.

  1. Inspect the engine for mechanical failure, or the binding of driven components including driveline related components.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the starter solenoid click only one time?

Go to Step 3

Go to Starter Solenoid Does Not Click

Inspect the engine and the belt drive system for mechanical binding (seized engine, seized generator).

Does the engine move freely?

Go to Step 4

Go to Engine Will Not Crank - Crankshaft Will Not Rotate in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L

Test the battery positive voltage circuit between the battery and the starter motor for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Go to Step 8

Test the ground circuit between the battery and the starter motor for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the starter. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Did you complete the replacement?

Go to Step 8

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
