ERRATIC DRIVER DIGITAL DISPLAY SERVICE PROCEDURE TO CORRECT

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1988-89 OLDSMOBILE--A/C/H/N AND W-CARS

Condition:

--------- The 1988 and 1989 Oldsmobile A, C, H, N, and W cars with the optional DIS may show an erratic display (random digits or unrecognizable characters) when the ignition is turned on.

Cause:

------ This condition may occur if the ignition key is turned on before the battery feed to the DIS is connected, or the "Courtesy" fuse is not installed.

Correction:

---------- To prevent this condition, or to correct it if it occurs, use the following procedure:

1. Turn the ignition key to "off". Remove the "Courtesy" fuse.

2. With the ignition key "off", reinstall the courtesy fuse. Then, turn the ignition key "on". The DIS should now operate normally.

IMPORTANT: Any time the battery cables are disconnected, or the courtesy fuse is removed, make sure that the ignition key is "off" before reconnecting the cable or replacing the fuse. This will apply power to the DIS correctly and prevent the above condition.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
