Rear Seat Radio Controls Inoperative w/o Video Entertainment

DEFINITION: With the radio operating normally, the rear speakers do not mute and the Rear Seat Audio (RSA) power indicator does not illuminate when the RSA power button is pressed.

Did you perform the Entertainment Diagnostic System Check?

Go to Step 2

  1. Turn the ignition to accessory.
  2. Turn the radio on and adjust the fade and balance controls to mid range.
  3. Plug in the headphones and adjust the headphone volume control.
  4. Press the power button on the Rear Seat Audio (RSA) control.

Do the rear speakers mute and do the headphones work?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Did the volume increase greatly when the RSA power button was pressed?

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 7

Press any function on the Steering Wheel Controls (SWC).

Did the SWC function operate normally?

Go to Step 7

Test the ground circuit of the RSA for:

    • An open
    • High resistance
    • Poor connection

Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 12

Test the rear seat audio enable signal circuit between the radio and the RSA for:

    • An open
    • High resistance
    • Short to ground

Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 12

Test the radio on signal circuit at the RSA for:

    • An open
    • High resistance
    • Poor connection

Did you find and correct the condition?

Test the remote radio control signal circuit between the radio and the RSA for:

    • An open
    • Short to ground
    • Short to battery voltage

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 12

  1. Connect the radio harness connector and the RSA connector.
  2. Turn the ignition to accessory.
  3. Turn the radio on.
  4. Using a DMM backprobe the RSA connector at the remote radio control signal.
  5. Press the RSA power button on and off while observing the meter display.

Does the meter display a momentary voltage reading as the RSA power button is pressed?

Go to Step 10

  1. Inspect for poor connections at the radio and the RSA Control. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
  2. If a poor connection is not found, replace the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement .

Did you complete the repair?

  1. Inspect for poor connections at the radio and the RSA Control. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
  2. If a poor connection is not found, replace the RSA Control. Refer to Rear Seat Audio Control Replacement .
