Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the engine left side spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Replacement in Engine Controls.
  2. Remove the right engine mount strut at the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Right Side .
  3. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve from the engine left side valve rocker arm cover.

  4. Object Number: 54369 Size: SH

Notice: Valve rocker arm cover gasket and sealant must be carefully trimmed away from lower intake manifold gasket. Failure to do so will damage the lower intake manifold gasket, causing a severe oil leak.

Important: When removing the valve rocker arm cover, ensure the gasket stays in place attached to the cylinder head.

  5. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  6. Remove the valve rocker arm cover. Bump the end of the valve rocker cover with the palm of your hand or a soft rubber mallet if the cover adheres to the cylinder head.

  9. Remove the valve cover gasket.
  10. Clean the sealing surface on the cylinder head with degreaser.
  11. Clean the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 190588 Size: SH

Important: Apply sealant GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) or equivalent, at the cylinder head to the lower intake manifold joint.

  1. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to the lower intake manifold joints (1).

  2. Object Number: 54369 Size: SH
  3. Install a NEW gasket to the valve rocker arm cover. Ensure that the gasket is properly seated in the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  4. Install the valve rocker arm cover.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  7. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  8. Install the PCV valve to the engine left side valve rocker arm cover.
