Ozone Cracking of the Spare Tire Sidewall

On vehicles that have externally stored compact high pressure spare tires supplied by Bridgestone/Firestone, some customers may encounter sidewall cracking. This cosmetic cracking is from ozone damage and limited to the surface of the sidewall. The affected tire is branded "Tempa."

Extensive testing was performed on tires where sidewall ozone cracking has been observed. This testing confirms that the cracking is cosmetic in nature and does not affect the tires safety, performance or durability. Bridgestone/Firestone has confirmed that the tires meet all applicable DOT standards. Tires that exhibit this condition (as shown below) may:

  1. Remain in Service, or
  2. Be considered for adjustment for up to 4 years from the date of tire manufacture.
