GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

This vehicle has an engine oil life monitor. The engine oil life monitor will show when to change the engine oil and oil filter. This will usually occur between 5 000 km (3,000 miles) and 12 500 km (7,500 miles) since the last oil change. Under severe conditions, the indicator may come on before 5 000 km (3,000 miles).

Vehicle should not be driven more than 12 500 km (7,500 miles) or 12 months without an oil and oil filter change. The system won't detect dust in the oil. So if the vehicle is driven in a dusty area, be sure to change the oil and oil filter every 5 000 km (3,000 miles) or sooner if the CHANGE OIL SOON indicator comes on. Reset the oil life monitor when the oil has been changed.

Resetting Procedure

To reset the oil life monitor:

  1. Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds.
  3. If the CHANGE OIL SOON indicator flashes two times, the system is resetting.

  4. Turn the key off after the light has finished flashing, then start the vehicle. If the CHANGE OIL SOON indicator comes back on, the engine oil life monitor has not reset. Repeat the procedure again.

If the vehicle is equipped with the U20 option code, the vehicle has an oil life low indicator. The oil life low indicator shows an estimate of the oil's remaining useful life. When the oil life index is less than 10%, the display will show OIL LIFE LOW.

To reset the oil life monitor, press and hold the MODE button until the light appears next to OIL LIFE.

Press and hold the trip RESET button until the oil life percentage changes to 99%.
