Memory Seat Operation Oldsmobile w/ A43

The memory seat system consists of the following components:

    • Memory seat/mirror module
    • Four seat motors

The memory seat/mirror module controls the movement of the following components:

    • Three seat position motors
    • One seat back recline motor

All of the motors operate independently of each other.

Motors

The following 3 motors move the position of the seat:

    • The horizontal motor
    • The rear vertical motor
    • The front vertical motor

Both vertical motors run simultaneously when the left seat switch signals the entire seat to move up or down. The recline motor moves the angle of the seatback.

All of the motors are reversible. For example, one motor moves the seat both forward and back. When the memory seat/mirror module receives an input to move the seat forward, it supplies battery positive voltage (B+) and ground to run the motor to move the seat forward. When it receives an input to move the seat back, the memory seat/mirror module supplies power to the same motor. The voltage and the ground apply to the opposite cavities on the motor connector. The voltage polarity reverses and the motor runs in the opposite direction moving the seat back. All of the seat motors are powered in an identical manner.

Memory Set

The memory seat/mirror module receives the inputs from the left seat switch. The current seat positions may be recorded for two different drivers. In order to record the current positions, press the SET MEMORY button. This is followed by a beep in order to acknowledge the input. Within 5 seconds, either the DRIVER-1 or DRIVER-2 button is pressed. When the memory seat/mirror module receives these inputs, the module records the feedback voltages from the four seat position sensors for the appropriate driver. A single beep is sounded in order to acknowledge that the position was recorded. You may perform a memory set function at any time.

Memory Recall

When the DRIVER-1 or DRIVER-2 button is pressed, the memory seat/mirror module receives the input. A single beep is sounded. The memory seat/mirror module supplies battery voltage (B+) to the seat motors until all the seat position sensor feedback voltages equal the feedback voltages stored in the memory for the appropriate driver.

When the DRIVER-1 and DRIVER-2 buttons are pushed simultaneously battery positive voltage (B+) is supplied simultaneously to the memory seat/mirror module memory 1 and memory 2 inputs, signaling the easy exit function. In response, the memory seat/mirror module will move the seat to the fully down and back position. The module supplies battery positive voltage (B+) to the following components until the seat is fully back and down:

    • LH seat front vertical motor
    • LH seat rear vertical motor
    • LH seat horizontal motor

The recline motor is not moved during this operation.

The memory recall and easy exit functions may only be performed if the ignition switch is in the OFF position or the gear selector is in the PARK position.

Personalization

When a keyless entry transmitter is used to unlock the vehicle's doors, the remote function actuator (RFA) module communicates the unlock command and which driver performed the command to the memory seat/mirror module via CKT 1985 (PPL). Each keyless entry transmitter is programmed with one of 4 personalized recall options when the RFA receives an unlock message:

    • Mode 0: The memory seat/mirror module sounds a single beep and the left seat will not move.
    • Mode 1: The memory seat/mirror module sounds a single beep and the left seat and both mirrors will move to the position stored for DRIVER-1.
    • Mode 2: The memory seat/mirror module sounds a single beep and the left seat and both mirrors will move to the position stored for DRIVER-2.
    • Mode 3: The memory seat/mirror module sounds a single beep and the left seat will move to the easy exit position which is fully back and down.

Perform the following procedure in order to program a keyless entry transmitter for a specific mode:

    • Mode 0: Press the SET MEMORY button on the left seat switch. Within 5 seconds, press the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter.
    • Mode 1: Perform a memory set function for DRIVER-1. Within 5 seconds, press the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter.
    • Mode 2: Perform a memory set function for DRIVER-2. Within 5 seconds, press the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter.
    • Mode 3: Perform one of the two following procedures in order to set the keyless entry transmitter to this mode:
      • Perform an easy exit function. Within 5 seconds, press the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter.
      • Press the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter. Within 5 seconds, press the DRIVER-1 and DRIVER-2 buttons simultaneously.

Memory Seat/Mirror Module Diagnostic Modes

In order to enter the manual diagnostic modes of the memory seat/mirror module, ensure that the ignition switch is off. If the ignition is set to RUN or START while the module is in a diagnostic mode, then the module will exit diagnostics and sound 3 beeps.

Mode 1 diagnostics of the memory seat/mirror module is used to test all memory, seat, and mirror switch inputs.

In order to enter Mode 1 of the manual diagnostics, the memory seat/mirror module diagnostic connector must be grounded. The diagnostic connector may be taped into the harness. When the connector is grounded, the module will beep once in order to acknowledge entry into the mode 1 diagnostics. The connector must remain grounded throughout the mode 1 diagnostics. If ground at the connector is lost for more than 5 seconds, the module will exit diagnostics and sound 3 beeps. The following functions are disabled during Mode 1:

    • Memory
    • Seat
    • Mirror

In order to test the inputs, the following switches are operated as if performing that function:

    • The memory switch
    • The seat switch
    • The mirror switch

Each time the memory seat/mirror module receives an input from a switch, the module beeps once. If a switch is operated and the module does not beep, the module did not receive the input. There may be a problem with the switch or wiring from the switch to the module.

The Mode 2 diagnostics is used in order to test the seat and mirror position sensor inputs. In order to enter mode 2 of the manual diagnostics, while in mode 1 diagnostics the ground is removed from the memory seat/mirror module diagnostic connector and then reapplied within 5 seconds. The module will then beep twice in order to acknowledge that the module has entered the mode 2 diagnostics. If ground at the connector is lost for more than 5 seconds, the module will exit diagnostics and sound 3 beeps. The seats and mirrors will move during the mode 2 diagnostics. In order to test the inputs, the left seat switch or power mirror switch is operated to command the seat or mirror to move. The position sensor input for that direction is tested. For example, if the seat is commanded to move forward, the module will test the forward/back position sensor. If the module sounds a beep when a switch is being operated, the module senses a discontinuity in that direction's position sensor. There may be a problem with the position sensor or the wiring from the module to the position sensor.

In order to exit the diagnostic mode, perform one of the following procedures:

    • Remove ground from the memory seat/mirror module diagnostic connector for more than 5 seconds.
    • Turn the ignition to the RUN or START position.

When the module exits the diagnostic mode, the module will sound 3 beeps in order to acknowledge that the module is no longer in the diagnostic mode.
