Instrument Panel Assembly Removal Buick

Removal Procedure

After a non-deployment accident, visually inspect the IP assembly for damage or deformation. Any visible damage indicate structural damage and therefore mandates IP assembly replacement.

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  3. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  4. Remove the upper trim panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement .
  5. Remove the information center telltale. Refer to Driver Information Center Replacement .
  6. Remove the IP trim plates. Refer to Instrument Cluster Trim Panel Replacement .
  7. Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  8. Remove the passenger inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  9. Remove the rear compartment lid release enable/oil reset switch. Refer to Rear Compartment Lid Valet Lock Out Switch Replacement .
  10. Remove the ashtray. Refer to Ashtray Replacement .
  11. Remove the IP lower trim pad. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  12. Important: Remove the steering column lower mounting bolts prior to removing the upper mounting bolts or damage to the lower steering column bearing may occur. Place a protective cloth on the steering column in order to protect the column from scratches.

  13. Lower the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and column tilt.

  15. Remove the IP assembly upper fasteners (1).
  16. Remove the IP lower fasteners (2).

  17. Object Number: 474828  Size: SH
  18. Remove the fasteners (1) from the IP center support.
  19. Pull the IP assembly rearward slightly.
  20. Disconnect the electrical connectors, including the antenna coax cable.
  21. Disconnect the aspirator hose.
  22. Remove the IP assembly.
  23. Transfer all necessary components.

Installation Procedure

  1. Partially install the IP assembly.
  2. Connect the electrical connectors, including the antenna coax cable.
  3. Connect the aspirator hose.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the IP assembly top fasteners (1) to the outer brackets.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  7. Install the fasteners (2) to the left and right lower front of the IP.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  9. Install the fasteners (1) to the IP center support.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  11. Raise the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and column tilt.
  12. Install the IP lower trim pad. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  13. Install the ashtray. Refer to Ashtray Replacement .
  14. Install the rear compartment lid release enable/oil reset switch. Refer to Rear Compartment Lid Valet Lock Out Switch Replacement .
  15. Install the passenger inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  16. Install the instrument panel trim plates. Refer to Instrument Cluster Trim Panel Replacement .
  17. Install the information center telltale . Refer to Driver Information Center Replacement .
  18. Install the upper trim panel . Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement .
  19. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  20. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.

Instrument Panel Assembly Removal Oldsmobile

Removal Procedure

  4. Remove the IP center air outlet deflector housing trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement .
  5. Remove the center console if necessary. Refer to Console Replacement .
  6. Remove the cluster trim plate. Refer to Instrument Cluster Trim Panel Replacement .
  7. Remove the upper trim pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement .
  8. Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs

  9. Remove the passenger inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  10. Remove the right sound insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Right Side .
  11. Remove the knee bolster and the deflector. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  12. Remove the PRNDL cable from the steering column if necessary.
  13. Important: Remove the steering column lower mounting bolts prior to removing the upper mounting bolts or damage to the lower steering column bearing may occur. Place a protective cloth on the steering column in order to protect the column from scratches.

  14. Lower the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column Tilt.

  16. Remove the bolts connecting the IP center bracket to the dash center support bracket.
  17. Remove the nuts from the IP outer support brackets.
  18. Remove the lower fasteners from the IP outer support brackets.
  19. Pull away the IP assembly from the dash.
  20. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  21. Disconnect the antenna coax cable.
  22. Remove the IP assembly.

Installation Procedure

  1. Partially install the IP assembly.
  2. Connect the electrical connectors.
  3. Connect the antenna coax cable.
  4. Align the IP assembly.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the nuts to the IP outer support brackets.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 9.5 N·m (84 lb in).

  8. Install the lower fasteners to the IP outer support brackets.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 9.5 N·m (84 lb in).

  10. Install the fasteners to the IP center bracket.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 9.5 N·m (84 lb in).

  12. Raise the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column Tilt.
  13. Connect the PRNDL cable if necessary.
  14. Install the passenger inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  15. Install the upper trim pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement .
  16. Install the cluster trim plate. Refer to Instrument Cluster Trim Panel Replacement .
  17. Install the right sound insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Right Side .
  18. Install the knee bolster and deflector. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  19. Install the center console if necessary. Refer to Console Replacement .
  20. Install the IP center air outlet deflector housing trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Replacement .
  21. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  22. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.

Instrument Panel Assembly Removal Pontiac

Removal Procedure

  3. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  4. Remove the center console if necessary. Refer to Console Replacement .
  5. Remove the auto transmission control assembly, if equipped with a console. Refer to Transmission Control Replacement in Automatic Transaxle.
  6. Remove the IP trim plate. Refer to Instrument Cluster Trim Panel Replacement .
  7. Remove the steering column filler. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement .
  8. Important: Remove the steering column lower mounting bolts prior to removing the upper mounting bolts or damage to the lower steering column bearing may occur. Place a protective cloth on the steering column in order to protect the column from scratches.

  9. Lower the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column Tilt.
  10. Remove the IP storage compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Storage Compartment Replacement .
  11. Remove the defroster grille. Refer to Defroster Grille Replacement .

  13. Remove the fasteners (5) from the IP support bracket.

  14. Object Number: 474826  Size: SH
  15. Remove the fasteners (4) from the steering column support.
  16. Remove the lower fasteners (3) from the IP end support brackets.
  17. Remove the fasteners (6) from the IP center bracket.
  18. Remove the upper fasteners (2) from the IP end support brackets.
  19. Remove the fasteners (1) from the upper IP.
  20. Disconnect the electrical connectors, including antenna coax cable.
  21. Remove the aspirator hose.
  22. Remove the IP assembly.

Installation Procedure

    Important: When installing the IP assembly, if the assembly does not properly align with the bottom of the windshield, loosen the center and the right IP support brackets in order to allow the proper alignment. Re-tighten the brackets after the IP assembly is aligned.

  1. Partially install the IP assembly into position.
  2. Install the aspirator hose.
  3. Connect the electrical connectors, including the antenna coax cable.
  4. Align the IP assembly.

  6. Install the fasteners (1) into the upper IP.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 3 N·m (27 lb in).

  8. Install the upper fasteners (2) to the IP end support brackets.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 9.5 N·m (84 lb in).

  10. Install the fasteners (6) to the IP center support bracket.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 9.5 N·m (84 lb in).

  12. Install the lower fasteners (3) into the IP end support brackets.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 9.5 N·m (84 lb in).

  14. Install the fasteners (4) to the steering column support.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  16. Install the fasteners (5) to the IP support brackets.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the fasteners to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  18. Install the IP compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Storage Compartment Replacement .
  19. Install the defroster grille. Refer to Defroster Grille Replacement .
  20. Raise the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column Tilt.
  21. Install the steering column filler. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement .
  22. Install the IP trim plate. Refer to Instrument Cluster Trim Panel Replacement .
  23. Install the auto transmission control assembly, if equipped with a console. Refer to Transmission Control Replacement in Automatic Transaxle.
  24. Install the center console if necessary. Refer to Console Replacement .
  25. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  26. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
