Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 298868  Size: SH
  1. Remove the pinch bolt (4) at the steering gear stub shaft (5).
  2. Remove the left IP sound insulator.
  3. Reposition the intermediate shaft seal (dust seal) (2) in order to access the upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt (4).
  4. Remove the pinch bolt (4).
  5. Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

  6. Disconnect the intermediate shaft (5) at the steering column (1).
  7. Remove the intermediate steering shaft (5) from the steering column (1).

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Position the intermediate steering shaft (5). Fully insert the shaft (5) into the pinch bolt (4) pot joint on the steering column (1).
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the pinch bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  3. Bottom-out the lower pinch pot joint on the steering gear (6).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the pinch bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  5. Reposition the seal (2), as needed.
  6. Install the left IP sound insulator.
