SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE-SEC. 7A 4T60 TRANS. 1-2 SERVO ASM

SUBJECT: SECTION 7A 4T60 TRANSAXLE 1-2 SERVO ASM AND SIDE CASE COVER PAN AND/OR GASKET. VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1991-93 OLDS/BUICK "A" MODELS

The following 4T60 Transaxle 1-2 Servo Assembly and Side Case Cover Pan and/or Gasket procedure replaces those found in the appropriate Service Manual and pages listed below.

CASE SIDE COVER PAN AND/OR GASKET

Tools Required:

J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture J 36462 Engine Support Fixture Adapter Leg

Remove or Disconnect

1. Air cleaner and duct assembly. 2. Shift control cable from lever. 3. Shift control cable bracket from transaxle and position aside. 4. Park/Neutral position switch electrical connector. 5. Torque strut from engine. 6. Install J 28467-A and J 36462. Refer to SECTION 7A. 7. Left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to SECTION 3E. 8. Left engine splash shield. 9. Left lower ball joint pinch bolt.

CAUTION:

Failing to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear andlor intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control, which could result in personal injury.

10. Steering gear pinch bolt from steering shaft and remove shaft. 11. Transaxle mounts nuts from frame. 12. Support frame with jack stands. 13. Left frame retaining bolts and discard bolts. 14. Lower left side of frame using jack stand. 15. Left brake hose screw from strut bracket. 16. Left drive axle from transaxle. Refer to SECTION 4D. 17. Transaxle oil cooler lines and plug openings. 18. Position drain pan under transaxle. 19. Cover bolts and nuts. 20. Cover and gasket.

Clean

Case and side cover gasket surfaces. Install or Connect

1. Gasket and cover. 2. Cover bolts and nuts.

Tighten Bolts and nuts to 11 N.m (98 lb.in.).

3. Transaxle oil cooler lines to transaxle. 4. Left drive axle to transaxle. Refer to SECTION 4D. 5. Left brake hose screw to strut bracket. 6. Raise left side of frame and install new bolts. Refer to SECTION 10-3. 7. Remove jack stand. 8. Transaxle mount nuts to frame.

Tighten Mount nuts to 46 N.m (34 lb.ft.).

CAUTION:

When installing the intermediate shaft make sure the shaft is seated prior to pinch bolt installation. If the pinch bolt is inserted into the coupling before shaft installation, the two mating shafts may disengage.

9. Shaft and steering gear pinch bolt. Refer to SECTION 3F. 10. Left lower ball joint pinch bolt. Refer to SECTION 3C. 11. Left engine splash shield. 12. Left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to SECTION 3E. 13. Remove J 28467-A and J 36462. 14. Torque strut to engine. 15. Park/Neutral position switch electrical connector. 16. Shift control cable bracket to transaxle. 17. Shift control cable to lever. 18. Air cleaner and duct assembly.

Adjust Fluid level.

Inspect

0 Proper completion of repairs. 0 Proper fluid level. 0 Fluid leaks. 0 Proper front end alignment. Refer to SECTION 3A.

1-2 SERVO ASSEMBLY

Remove or Disconnect

1. Raise vehicle and suitably support. Refer to SECTION OA. 2. Depress servo. 3. Snap ring, cover, piston, sealing ring, apply pin and servo spring.

Install or Connect

1. Servo spring, apply pin, sealing ring, piston, cover and snap ring. 2. Lower vehicle.

On page 7A-42 of the 1993 Buick Century and Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera/Cruiser Service Manual under the heading VALVE BODY and Step 6, the correct figure references are Figures 51 and 52.

The fastener tightening specification for the valve body bolts on a 4T60 transaxle has been revised. The new specification replaces those found in the appropriate Service Manual.

NOTICE: Tighten valve body bolts in a spiral paftern starting from the center. If bolts are tightened at random, valve bores may be distorted and inhibit valve operation.

Tighten

M6 bolts to 1 1 N.m (98 lb.in.). M8 bolts to 24 N.m (18 lb.ft.).
