FUEL GAUGE INOPERATIVE RETURN GAUGE CLUSTER FOR REPAIR

SUBJECT: FUEL GAUGE INOPERATIVE, BASE CLUSTER ONLY (RETURN CLUSTER FOR REPAIR)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1991 OLDSMOBILE A-CAR

The following information is offered as a diagnostic aid. Although this condition is very rare, looking for this condition as the first step in diagnosing an inoperative fuel gauge can save time and prevent replacement of good parts.

Condition:

----------- The fuel gauge may stick in one position, on the 1991 Oldsmobile A Car.

Cause:

------- The cluster applique may be pushed into the fuel gauge pointer hub by the trip odometer reset stem gasket, preventing it from moving. See View B. This condition was corrected in Production after VIN M6311633 (Oklahoma City), and M2314464 (Ste. Therese).

Correction:

------------ To correct this condition, remove the cluster and send it to the nearest AC Delco exchange centre, with the condition noted on the repair ticket. No attempts to repair the cluster should be made at the dealership.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
