CAMPAIGN: REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM BOLTS

CONDITION

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT A DEFECT WHICH RELATES TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY EXISTS IN SOME 1978, 1979, 1980 AND 1981 CUTLASS MODELS. THE BOLTS WHICH ATTACH THE REAR LOWER CONTROL ARMS TO THE FRAME ON THESE VEHICLES MAY EVENTUALLY FRACTURE, ALLOWING THE REAR CONTROL ARM TO DROP FREE. IF THIS HAPPENS WHILE A VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, A LOSS OF CONTROL COULD RESULT, AND A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

CARS AFFECTED

ALL 1978, 1979, AND 1980 CUTLASS MODELS FROM THE START OF PRODUCTION (S.O.P.) TO THE END OF PRODUCTION (E.O.P.) AND 1981 CUTLASS MODELS FROM THE START OF PRODUCTION UP TO THE VIN NUMBERS LISTED BELOW.

DEALER ACTION

DEALERS ARE TO REPLACE THE REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM TO FRAME BOLTS ON ALL VEHICLES SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN.

DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNER ON AFFECTED VEHICLES, REGARDLESS OF TIME, MILEAGE OR OWNERSHIP, AND ARE TO CORRECT ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN DEALER NEW AND USED CAR INVENTORY PRIOR TO THEIR SALE.

WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO YOUR NEW OR USED CAR INVENTORY IN THE FUTURE, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE RESELLING THE VEHICLE.

DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THE CAMPAIGN SERVICES ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES AS THEY ARE BROUGHT IN FOR ANY KIND OF SERVICE UNTIL ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN CORRECTED.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. RAISE VEHICLE AND REMOVE RIGHT REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM TO FRAME BOLT AND NUT (FIG. 1)

NOTICE: REMOVE AND REPLACE ONE SIDE AT A TIME TO PREVENT AXLE FROM SHIFTING.

2. INSTALL NEW REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM TO FRAME BOLT, WASHER AND NUT, TORQUE TO 100 N.M (74 FT. LBS.)

3. REMOVE LEFT REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM TO FRAME BOLT AND NUT.

4. INSTALL NEW REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM TO FRAME BOLT, WASHER AND NUT, TORQUE TO 100 N.M (74 FT. LBS.)

5. LOWER VEHICLE AND INSTALL YELLOW CORRECTION LABEL 81-C-8 ON THE RADIATOR BAFFLE WHERE IT IS READILY VISIBLE.

PARTS INFORMATION

REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM KITS WILL BE SHIPPED FROM G.M. PARTS (GMWDD) TO INVOLVED DEALERS ON A LIMITED BASIS AS PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. AS AVAIL- ABILITY INCREASES, ADDITIONAL PARTS INFORMATION WILL BE PROVIDED.

THE KIT, PART NUMBER 10021548, INCLUDES TWO (2) BOLTS, TWO (2) WAHSERS, AND TWO (2) NUTS.

PARTS REMOVED FROM THE INVOLVED VEHICLES ARE TO BE HELD FOR DISPOSITION BY AN OLDSMOBILE REPRESENTATIVE.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

DEALERS ARE TO SUBMIT CLAIMS ON THE CAMPAGIN CARD FURNISHED WITH THE PRINTOUT USING THE FOLLOWING INFORAMTION. PARTS WILL BE CREDITED AT DEALER NET PLUS 30% DEALER HANDLING ALLOWANCE.
